Vive Pro 2 at 6MP/eye vs Reverb 4.7MP/eye

Good news is that your 1080ti should be able to hit VIVE PRO resolutions easily in Horizons if not more. I got fair results with my 1070 in a laptop! It may struggle to get to native PRO 2 resolution but because it runs at 120fps you'll be able to re-project at 60fps which should still be pretty good compared to usual 45fps. Then there's the total lack of screen door which will make everything look nicer anyway.

Coming from an original VIVE will be a revelation for you!
Well then, I'm flabbered here.

Only done very quick tests in Horizons so far, but my 1080 ti has just hit both the 120fps and 90fps on their respective highest resolution with VR Medium. I've not done anymore more extensive testing yet as it was a quick check during my lunch break. And this was in space outside an outpost. So yeah, there'll be inside stations and planet surfaces to check out.

It's worth pointing out the the 2 highest resolutions that the Vive software has, are greyed out on this GPU. I think they're only 'unlocked' on 2000 or 3000 Nvidia cards (and probably the latest AMD beasts).

Even so, the resolution bump makes everything look just wonderful!

On my previous Vive (original), I'd done the lens mod with Gear VR lenses so I'm looking forward to replacing the Fresnel lenses that come with this thing as soon as I can.

First impressions, very impressive! Especially on the older card I'm rocking.

I think it has something to do with the frame packing/compression as it only needs a Display Port 1.4. Even so, just the no screen door effect makes a huge difference.

I can access them on my 2080ti

I have just replaced my Vive Pro with the Gear VR lenses for the pro 2, early days yet ,but I'm not to happy with the very small sweet spot and the fresnel lenses, the gear ones will not fit this head set.
Like I say its early days, a bit more messing with settings and who knowes

This is one of the first snags I'm seeing with the VP2. Really not sure why HTC keep sticking with the fresnels, they much have a reason, but clarity isn't one of them.

I swapped my original Vive lenses with Gear VR lenses and the difference was really nice. These VP2 lenses are a different shape, but I'm sure someone one day will create better lenses to swap out.

Yeah. I've tried it with my wireless adapter too. Whilst the highest wireless resolution is currently very near the original vive (so the image has a soft appearance), not having the screen door effect between the pixels of the LCD panel makes a lot of difference. Looking forward to them updating the firmware of the wireless to push some extra pixels around.

Yeah, can't come soon enough! That and proper "Motion Smoothing" rather than the crappy old reprojection it does now :( If they can get that all sorted it really will be an excellent headset.

I've just ordered some extra thin face pads as I tried taking the standard one off just to see what it was like. Apart from being uncomfortable (!!!) it must have given me an extra 10 degrees or so FoV which looked pretty darn amazing. Funny how the face pad on the PRO 2 feels way firmer and thicker than the one on the PRO which kind of limits the FoV...

Totally agree. Some games seem okay, but some just aren't liking it. Nothing I do can get Alyx running nicely.

I had my VR Covers arrive a few days before the headset. Yeah, the FoV thing is interesting. The pads I have are the 10mm ones which get me really close to the lenses.

Side note, I've actually had to get in touch with HTC about my headset. I think I've just had some bad luck, the left LCD has a single bright spot just left of centre. Defo not a dead (or very alive) pixel, it's too big for that.

It's visible in every app, at all resolutions, both wired and wireless. I think it's just a case of a (hopefully) rare LCD defect. Bit gutted really, but I've chatted with someone this evening and the UK support team will be getting back to me this week.

Overall though, it's really nice to not really be able to see pixels. At least not without having to pause my brain, squint and think about it for a bit anyway.

Sorry to hear you've got a bad headset. At least they are sorting it out, I've had positive experiences with their tech support when one of the light houses failed with my original vive.

I'm actually thinking about returning mine due to the lack of SteamVR Motion Smoothing. While I can get away with it in Horizons, Odyssey is another matter entirely. I know there is a good chance that Odyssey will received the necessary optimisations but there are also other games such as Flight Sim 2020, IL-2, Euro Truck Sim, VR Chat etc that regularly, and sometimes constantly, require reprojection and that's even on my original PRO with its now crummy resolution

HTC's motion compensation is so bad these games are actually uncomfortable, if not outright unplayable, in its current form. I know I'm "only" on a 2080ti and a 3080ti is almost certainly coming in the near future but still, you don't really expect a headset at this price range to be hobbled by its software and even a 3090 apparently doesn't have enough grunt for Flight Sim to run without reprojection!

I may keep it, I'm really not 100% sure at the moment. I just know that in the UK we only have 14 days to return so I've started the process even if I don't actually go through with it.

I saw MRTVs confirmed that implementing SteamVR Motion Smooting "is not quite that simple" and that is coming from an HTC engineer. In my experience that means it "can't be done" or at the very least "won't be fixed", although admittedly I don't really understand why it can't be done at a SteamVR software level. HTC must have really had to work around some physical hardware/software limitations to get the PRO 2 to work at all.

I know, 1st world problems etc, but it still amazes me why someone can't produce an all round excellent headset.

All fixed - it was Window's Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling. Turned it off in Graphics Settings in Windows and everything is now perfect!

Update

I have now solved the reprojection issues on the PRO 2 by disabling Window's Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling. This option is located in the "Graphics Settings" menu in Windows so you can just do a search for it in the Windows Search Bar.

Symptoms:
1. Double/Triple/Blurred vision when playing the game at high details levels when reprojection is kicking in
2. Pink "Frame Error" lines constantly in the SteamVR frame timing graph.
3. Better frame rates when the window is "Unfocused" e.g. by pressing the windows key.

If you're suffering from any of those then this may help you.

The PRO 2's Motion Compensation is actually fine. Not quite as good as native SteamVR Motion Smoothing but it certainly not the horrendous mess I thought it was!

I am going to see if Odyssey is now playable...

...yep, Odyssey is now playable in space. Still way more reprojection going on than in Horizons and I suspect planetary landing is still a no go for me. But the new lighting system in Odyssey is amazing! The star field is much better and the blacks seems, well, blacker! :D

are there any good community guides on setting up your equipment for VR?

I appreciate the VP2 is very new but in principal the process should be similar to other SteamVR headsets
