...I recently replaced my old CH Products gear with a VKB Gladiator EVO Space Combat stick and a VKB WWII Throttle + SEM-V combo to go with my newish Turtle Beach V1 Rudder Pedals… it all works great but I‘ve started to wish I’d been more patient and waited for this new throttle now instead of getting the WWII one. I guess some people like me are never satisfied!
Before you purchase that newest ST>ECS throttle whenever it comes out at whatever the cost I'm researching another alternative.
C'mon... You want one and you know it!
OK...You have been buggin' me to do this. I was looking around at the VKB North America site and accidentally hit the BUY button! I hate when that happens.
Cheers for the advice. I'm very tempted to switch over to the HOSAS setup by grabbing the left
VKB Gladiator Omni Throttle as well as the right hand stick. I was a bit leery of using a HOSAS setup at first, but then I saw that you could get an angled left stick that can be used as a throttle on the z-twist.
With more research HOSAS definitely improves combat strafing with full throw joystick analog side thrusters instead of digital hats or even small analog thumb sticks. But what to do with all those missing toggle switches. I'm researching one solution.
This is a VKB HOSAS setup plus adding two additional modules to one of the joysticks. I'm not counting the controls on the actual joysticks or any throttle versions nor do I care about digital rotating wheels for now. With that my HOTAS VKB Gladiator EVO NXT and a X-56 throttle gives me 17 bindings. With the HOSAS VKB setup and two additional modules I get 29 bindings. There are differences as on the X-56 a toggle switch quickly controls two bindings close to the hand. The HOSAS version needs a switch for each binding and may have to reach for it a little. Still with the X-56 I often had to remove my right hand from the joystick to conveniently toggle a switch on the X-56 throttle. It is a new way to play.
As for setup I am left handed so will put the additional module controls on the right joystick so I can use the mouse on the left. For right handed players (which of course being left handed we are better than you dealing with a right handed world) put it on the Omni throttle.
Meanwhile going to X-Plane 12 or Microsoft Flight Simulator 2023 I don't have to remember what were the toggle settings on the X-56 throttle. They are labeled on the VKB controls.
Then there is VKB support with the amazing programming abilities deciding what you want your control to do and have lights indicate that you did it. For the first time in Elite Dangerous I'll have three green lights telling me the landing gear is down or not, if I activate the lights or fuel scoop or want a light to tell me that all joysticks are centered as well as warning lights. The flap controls in ED not so much but someone will figure out how to use it.
VKB is more insane as they want you to open these controls and connect modules, move springs around and design custom tension. If something breaks they will send you the part. My first VKB Gladiator EVO NXT many years ago wore out the cable connecting the joystick to the base probably because I didn't install it right. I contacted VKB, sent them a picture and they replaced it for free.
The cost is not cheap per US currency buit you decide. Maybe wait for putting all this gear together then watch the results on YouTube.
175.00 Gladiator NXT Evo omni throttle - LH
165.00 Gladiator NXT EVO space combat premium - RH
99.00 GNX FSM-GA switchboard module
70.00 GNX SEM side extension module
20.00 GNX MFH multi-function holder
5.00 GNX right reinforcing plate
5.00 GNX left reinforcing plate (not shown)
15.00 GNX USB H1D controller (X 2 = 30.00)
UPDATE: Per replies and the Elite Dangerous 32 button limit I've ordered two GNX USB H1D controllers for the modules. The joysticks come with the H1D controller to connect to the PC via USB. The modules have module-to-module connectors that connect to each other and a joystick. Per design multiple modules and a joystick can have 1 USB cable connecting to the PC. With the ED button limits these connectors are replaced with the H1D controllers which come with a USB cable. Now two modules and a joystick have three USB cables connecting. The Omni Throttle makes four total. As I run a powered USB hub to the PC just for game controllers, webcam and mic it should all work and Elite Dangerous will be working with 2 modules, 2 joysticks a mouse and a keyboard.
Anyway I'm awaiting the gear to show up, put them together then we will see. Is it better than keyboard/mouse? KB/M players have always promoted that this is much better than a HOTAS joystick/throttle. Maybe with an omni throttle the gap closes a little. Find a PVPer and ask what they are using!
