Voice Attack = Poo!

It really is.

I love the concept, I love the practical implications it offers, I love the imaginative fantasy SciFi element it brings to the fore but, it doesn't work.

Why does it not work ?

Probably because it doesn't get my accent, my local slur and the colloquial norm that is me, is my peers and contemporaries ?

Its windows that has the problem, have you gone through the voice training? Takes about 10 mins and improves recognition of words immensely.

Works fine for me with my crappy Australian accent. I ran the Speech training in Control panel 3 times which is recommended and now its pretty good, very few mistakes.

Problem is between the keyboard and chair.. Seriously it works fine, you are doing something wrong. Explain the steps you have taken

You have to train the OS to understand the words. There are many phrases and key words I use that are either not ordinary or other languages, and it's easy to use the OS Speech to Text training to record how you say things, then tell the computer, this is what I'm saying when I say these words. It's really quite good.

Yup, voice trained Windows 9,X's.

Still doesn't work that great.

It's 50/50 if a command will work and even be recognised. I fly through the W7 voice rec training btw, very quickly, but VA just don't seem to get it.

It's either your mic, your voice (mumbling) or your command weight setting.

Don't just whack your mic up, and don't set it too low. Try a command weight setting of 25, try ticking disable adaptive recognition, read the manual..

I've programmed mine to understand sentences, this helps a lot when others are in the room. So for example, instead of just saying 'Gear up' or Divert power to weapons' I'll say 'retract the landing gear please' or 'Astra, divert power to the engines' That way it wont misunderstand me

There's nothing wrong with Oz accents. Try understanding 80 year old grandparents from Belfast. Or cousins from Newfoundland outports.
I tried the voice command, but the dogs didn't obey 100% of the time when I asked my Weapons Officer Sophia to deploy weapons or for my Navigator Wilbur engage Friendship Drive. Plus I have to keep the noise down when the GF is watching Dual Survivor.

Training voice in Windows is a must for using any progs or apps that need aural input.
o7 CMDR and fly safe!

You have to voice train the specific words... the long read these sentences things only get it so far. You can actually teach it how you say individual words. It's great! You get to build a personalized library.

It's subjective, but VA seems to latch on to defined command words a lot better than Windows itself can actually understand the words. Probably because VA is weighting the possibility of a match and not having to have it perfect if it's over a threshold. So don't blame VA when it actually has more flexibility than the OS tool it's using. Have you turned on the "show confidence level" (on the settings page) and seen how good or bad it's picking up on your commands? Try adjusting some of the other weighing variables, it could need just a little bit here and there to fall into a reliable match. And hope that Windows 10 has improved the recognition software.

Also, having multiple words in a command actually helps the matching a lot, as a slight miss on one but a good result on the other counts as a hit.

Yeah Oz accent is fine, NZ accent on the otherhand...

:p

I did have issues with VA and I have a fairly clean English accent. However I was using a fan nearby, and the quality of the mic was not the best, after I sorted both of those things out with a noise cancelling mic, and moving the fan directly off me VA worked fine.

I trained my OS for an hour or more and it still didnt understand my "next"... And i speak clearly! No idea whats up with it, but you can imagine i was sitting there "next" "next" " "neext" "neaxt" "neoxt" "nexT" "neXT" "nEXT!" "BLOODY NEEEEXT!!!!!":D

I think i'll look into learning it specific words mentioned above. I just did the standard training bits where you get to say whats on the screen. But going to the "next" session broke me down eventually lol.

I had major problems with it too.

But since I use an X55 HOTAS, i really don't see what i'd use it for. It would just have been cool to talk to the ship, but when it refuses to understand for the 100th time, it's not so cool anymore.

Having buttons at fingers on reach certainly is a help but, that's not why I want to have VA working.

Having the option of stringed presses ala macro is where the benefit lies, ala the evade video popular on YouTube. Say "evade" and watch your ship take a pre set series of moves is what I really want (spicy.)

Anyhoo, disregarding the typical internet attempts at belittlement (such as the problem lies between the screen and the seat) I have attempted to adjust my settings, still to no avail.

The guy that posted the 'Burnostoun' video is bang on the money. Yes, I'm a Scot, yes I have a Lanarkshire accent, yes saying the number '11' is as good as asking for your accent to be relegated to third world status.
I've had as much luck with Siri, that really is saying something.

You can string (macro) with a joystick too. With HOTAS you always get software to bind control with, and they can do complex macros. :)

^^^What these guys said.

Take the time to set up MS Speech first. Have a decent mic. This is a must. Do at least three times until the tutorial understands you flawlessly.
Also set up multiple commands for the same line...

When I say, "Take us out" when I wanna jump, I will set up an alternate of "takes out" since I have noticed it will confuse the two. (Or if I say it too fast.)

When configured properly, VA is a great tool.

Once you've mastered the basics, check out Plah!, he's one of the devs on the project and has really good tutorials for advanced programming. It opens up the possibilities to a whole new level.

I also recommend the Astra voice pack from the above guy. They are adding and updating for he new ED builds. Its cheap and adds a needed level of immersion.

Works fine for me, and I have a foreign accent. Try setting the command weight to a high number, like 70 or 85, it will make your commands more likely to be recognized if they sound close to what the computer is expecting to hear. Also, check if there are words that are consistently recognized wrong, and change their spelling in the doctation field if necessary. For example, I noticed that despite my best efforts, VA doesn't understand when I say "fish", it hear "fitch", so I simply changed the spelling in my command that uses this word.
