I've only used the in game voice so far. I've used skype in group voice calls with other games. Usually I find a group in game eventually and use whatever they use. Teamspeak, ventrilo, etc.

Oh, forgot to state my own preference: Mumble - no need to mess with volume controls (a la Ventrilo)... it equalizes sound volumes automatically - none too loud, none too faint. And in general the sound quality is superb.

Haven't used voice chat with ED yet. I voted for in-game though... for some reason I just think I would prefer not to be distracted.
My other choice would be mumble. Stick it on a VPS. Open Source wins.

I'd prefer in game with all the situation based distortion etc. Except comms hardly ever works. If they fixed it, it would be fabulous.

Yea... the only way I've gotten in-game comm to work is that I "hail" someone (which fails, always), they "hail" me back (which also fails, every time), and then I "hail" them again - which, surprisingly enough, works... Third time's the charm? I don't know how FD's managed to mess that up ... should've dismissed the whole upnp to trashbin and come up with a solid solution.

The biggest issue we've had with u game is just not hearing each other. Often only one person can hear the other. Shame really, because when it does work, it's fantastic.

I've got the in-game option to work OK, but the quality of the voice is woeful.

The static etc. is a great touch but it's really hard to understand what the other person is saying, I just found myself shouting "WHAT?" at the computer a lot.

Switched over to Skype and it worked much better.

Our group use ventrilo but we'd rather use in game if it worked consistently. It's often too quiet, cuts out or records background sounds. It also needs a push to talk rather than a push to mute option.

If i would see the necessity for voicechat within this game (i am more of a loner) i would use teamspeak simply because i am used to it from hanging out there with my friends and family in some of the mmos i play.

Built-in comms usually work like charm (provided we are in the same system), and the additional effects (static, distortion) are great.

However, when we want to start the chat (even text chat) it won't work until we actually enter the same system. Don't know if it is meant to by that way for sake of realism, but at least the text option should always work, which is sadly not the case..
