VR Galaxy Map navigation hotfix proposals

Once I had mapped the Galaxy Map navigation to my HOTAS, I feel silly for thinking the map was broken.

My problem was trying to use the mouse, a 2D pointing tool, in a 3D environment. I think this is what others must be doing, because as others said above - it works perfectly. Typing is a bit of peek-down-the-nose but the navigation of the map is great, I enjoy using it now in VR

Plotting course in VR sucks hard ...........

No issues with the Gal Map either. Only improvement I can suggest is an on screen keyboard so I can type the system names more easily.

Nothing is worse than having to lift your hmd to type something. I've been typing for years, but the new key boards don't even have the dots for the home keys, anyway, they need to create a virtual keyboard OR ............ when you choose a mission it should allow you to click on the final destination like a hyper-link would do that takes you to that point on the star chart, so there is no fumbling around.

Fix mouse selection via raytracing or show a toggleable selection ray that roughly starts at your virtual nose, comparable to the rays that show for the VR controlers when they are supposed to point at something in 3D-space. Then have a hotkey that selects the system currently hit by the ray.
Also fix the placement of the plot course etc popup-menu by putting it into 3D-space for VR instead of on the HUD-layer. But that would require the mouse selection to be fixed, so...

I have been using ED and VR since the 0400 runtimes and the DK2...Sept 14 (give or take). I was VERY frustrated with the Galmap until I got my HOTAS setup to use the map properly.

I use CH sticks. My throttle has a thumbstick. Here's how I do it:

Thumbstick: Translates the blue cursor around the plane (XY)
RMouse-Click-Hold, mouse FB: Changes XY Plane elevation; e.g., the Z Plane
LMouse-Clock-Hold, mouse drag: Rotates the XY Plane about the vertical axis of the blue cursor
Mouse wheel: Zoom in and out

It's even easier in the Sysmap with the same bindings. I don't have any issues in the 2.3 update either. Maybe some are having issues, and I hope they get sorted. I did learn that proper binding to fit your interaction preferences can help, too.

It really does work well, with a HOTAS. I can't imagine anyone in VR is playing with a mouse, so I'm left to assume they just haven't taken the time to actually bind the controls before saying it's broken

yeah I use my joystick and it's a breeze.. never had an issue with the map after setting that up. For those asking for keybindings, just pick whatever you want. I have my hat buttons for strafing on my current plane, then one set of buttons moves up/down. my joystick itself rotates the view around and throttle zooms. But do it however you want. Just pick something and let your brain learn it.

edit: actually I realized my HAT buttons are for menu selecting... i have different buttons bound for strafing. You probably shouldn't use the HAT for anything other than menu selection.

After checking this out last night again I found out where my problem was! I've had the grid switched off and therefore couldn't see the circle marker.

Thanks very much to all for your suggestions, that's actually solved the problem and indeed no fix is required. All you need to do is map your hotas to navigate around the map to your liking and turn on the Grid in the last tab (settings) of Galaxy Map.

Fly safe Commanders and happy VR-ing to all :)

Just to check do you know how to use a filter for plotting routes? For example if you select Star Class from the top drop down you can then check only the KGBFOAM stars that are scoopable. Then at the bottom you'll see a check box for filtering (can't recall the exact wording). Volia, routing will do all it can to take you through scoopable stars. They'll be a few places where there just isn't one so you still need to pay attention. Really cool add from 2.2

If needed, i can highly recommend putting some markers on the extra keys, ive got marks on alt, tab, return and backspace in addition to the ordinary home buttons.

Im using a small laptop sized keyboard sitting in between my throttle and flightstick and its got a nonstandard layout for other than the actual letters.

I just use a dot of blue tac but you could easily superglue something more permanent to the keys if you want.
