VR-Heads: Would You Want A Virtual Cockpit?

There are no actual real buttons or switches in our cockpits. We just have a GUI HUD with indicators. So, for stabbing buttons and switches, FDev would have to change the cockpits of every ship to include buttons and switches to give us manual control of these things. All of the buttons and switches in the cockpit now are just fake eye candy.

Yep, but it's eye candy that reacts when I jab a key on my keyboard.. I can see the Holo-Me moving the stick, doesn't actually help me in any way.

Yeah any kind of fake analogue switchery would be an extra mile that I wouldn’t actually expect them to travel. It would just be cool ;)

Two options occur though, if they were to go for it:

  • The flappy panels which hold the throttle and stick have a bunch of switches & fake interface points. These are the same for all ships. They could just assign an interaction point for some key ones, with audio for confirmation. And/or animate them toggling state on top.
  • They could allow placeable interaction points, as with the Holocab mod, letting Cmdrs place ‘buttons’ wherever their personal headcanon wanted them to be ;)

Obviously actual cockpit remodelling to have overhead switches etc would be great, but that’s probably beyond the scope of even this flight-of-fancy thread ;)

I’ve always thought the galaxy map would be a borderline religious experience if you could fly & swipe your way around it ;). Just imagine re-scaling with the classic hands-together / hands-apart technique :D

Now that would have my 1000% support. :) Just don't take my stick away. :p

I think the virtual buttons to push would be something that would work better with proper controllerless hand tracking. That way a physical hotas could be used as we do now rather than relying on the controller tracking for the joystick limiting button options and losing some of the accuracy of a physical hotas.

Yeah that would definitely be the ideal.

I guess I’m thinking of it in terms of:

  • Comparable games have done it
  • If FDev were to do it, it would be as part of a bigger update like ‘New Era’
  • As such it would have to be pegged to current domestic hardware.

But in that ideal world, FDev would also support all kinds of arcane peripheries too, as they currently do.

Motion controllers just = the gateway drug ;)

OP. Good/Neat idea, but no thanks; I'd keep on hitting my desk & monitor with my hands. I'll stick with LH joystick, K/B, Mouse and VoiceAttack.

Hah, I've never actually hit any imaginary cockpits to date. But I think that's because, without the need to be close to a joystick etc, you can push back from the desk. (Keyboarding would be an issue though. A virtual keyboard would be ideal for sure ;))

Fair enough though :)

I'm so glad you started this thread. Because of it I've found out about driver_leap and the VR support for Leap Motion (which I bought shortly after it came out, played with for five minutes, and put back in its box). Apparently I can now configure Leap Motion to replace my VR controller and act as the Steam Controller. I'm going to be testing this later, as I have a Odyssey+ and the controllers that come with that are awful. If hand control (without controllers) is now feasible (I'll test it in X-Plane), then I'm probably never going to leave my living room again...

I'm currently using the Elite VR Cockpit overlay app (video) with HCS voice packs, and it is bananas! It's a virtual HOTAS overlay aligned with the in-game controls. You can add virtual buttons for all of the game bindings, I've got a few placed on parts of my ship's cockpit, but you can just have them floating wherever for convenience. It's also got interfaces for the galaxy and system maps (no motion control sweeping/zooming, unfortunately, perhaps in a future update). The feel of the HOTAS is comparable to VTOL VR, so definitely decent. It's even got a 6DOF controller that appears when your landing gear is down or flight assist is off, took some getting used to (it's super sensitive), but now I use it for all of my docking.

I ordered ProTubeVR's ProTas to supplement it, along with any other VR games with joystick control. Definitely looking forward to trying it out when it arrives.
