VR in Odyssey as a mod?

I hate to open yet another Odyssey VR thread, but this wasn't discussed anywhere and I guess this will be our only option. Considering the community I am pretty sure someone has the ability to come up with a solution.

I think the real question is whether Elite's architecture and FDev's policies allow this level of mod, and if not, whether we should 'lobby' for it. At this point I'd be happy to even pay for one like I did for Natural Locomotion, even if it comes serious compromises in the new legs gameplay (which I'm not interested in anyway).

We can already mod the game.

There's a mod that can remove certain effects. It's well known so I don't think FD are too concerned.

The tool used to remove effects can also fix many. Might be possible if FD allow VR to activate.

The existing “mods” are altering parameters of a graphics settings file - essentially something you can do with a text editor.

I doubt very much this would be a case of VR=on/off :)

VR code would still have to be in EDO and any mod would have to address that, probably using dll’s (I’m no expert but the Alien Isolation mod does it that way, pretty much reactivating unused VR code) or some background process, something I think the devs very much would frown upon.

JIC people aren't aware.

3Dmigoto is a spin off of the Helix mod, a tool designed to find and fix shaders broken in S3D.
So far we have only seen limited use of its abilities in ED, that being to find dodgy shaders and disable them, which might be why people think it is just a text file with a bunch of toggles.

HOWEVER

Its main use is to find shaders, which are borked in S3D and then attempts to fix them (or allows a shaderhacker to) by adding depth information, or something similar. Often these shaders are overlooked by devs because they can't see them in S3D.

If Odyssey allows VR to activate, shaderhackers might be able to fix many effects and disable the unfixable ones.

I don't think that it should be up to the community to add a core element that has been in the game since launch. The onus of that is on Frontier. I have nothing but respect for what these guys do but I won't buy Odyssey without native support. I don't feel right rewarding Frontier for changing the rules five years in.

Tacit support from FDev for any mod that could turn the basic VR support back on would definitely be handy. (Especially if it did involve something more 'intrusive' than the current stuff, like dlls etc.)

I did ask in the initial thread (but got no reply).

Apparently a mod that show the HUD in free camera mode should do basically the trick.
Even if the movement is with an XBOX controler or keyboard/mouse.
In fine, the mod should work like this : add a n option in "options " menu that enable " experimental full VR mod ", upon disembark on foot free cam mode + suit cam are activated and centered, the cam hud is disabled, then a copy of the fps HUD overlay is applied instead, this allow the player to interact with environment with the hmd look emulating the mouse look.
When enabling exp Full VR mod you disable the free cam shortcuts and the hud of them as it is replaced by the fps one.
Imperfect as VR controler support, but working.
