VR is so real the word "fun" is detatched

The more and more I play the more I realize what I am experiencing is actually not really "fun". Its too real for that. My brain is basically convinced I am there living a second life, and if I were to live that life then fun would only be an occasional part of what goes on in my life. I have fun in ED.

Like last night I went on a deep space survey to Betelgeusse with the pirate who robbed me during my first week of play. Seeing Betelgeusse was very very fun.

But most of the time I am just living. Taking things almost seriously because I'm forced to by my brain. Its a good life, filled with lots of emotions, positive and negative. Ranging from sheer awe to frustration and embarrassment.

I'm not playing cos it's fun. This is new.

You are in the matrix. Do you want to take the red pill and escape? or the blue pill and remain blissfully unaware of the electronic world around you ??

The end game of VR WAS to develop a feeling of realism that will fool your brain into that exact mindset.

I'm just waiting till we get past the uncanny valley and VR will really be indistinguishable from reality.

I'm having a great time with my DK2 but I have to admit I have never had, so far, the feeling of being there. I constantly feel as if I was looking at a giant computer monitor really close to me, kind of like in arcades (which have similar looking screens, at least the old ones I played). Maybe higher resolution and lower screen door effect will solve this with the consumer version?

Honestly, I seldom use my rift these days for Elite. The Galaxy map is horrible and those long super cruises are horribly boring. I'm really considering the purchase of a 4k monitor :-D

It's the VR rush.

You didn't implement VoiceAttack to control the galaxy map?

You might consider a 1440p monitor. It runs a lot better then a 4K. I send my 4K monitor back because if you want to run at 60Hz, you will need two outputs. That means that all apps will open to the half of you screen (like running 2 spanned screens). It will never have the performance of a "singe" stream with the technology implemented in the current display drivers.

Is there a good thread on how to do this ? I have voice attack set up for elite but not really for the galaxy map. What kind of functions do you set up and how does it help?

Edit: my rift will be here in a few days and honestly I've been worried about the map... Some pointers would be greatly appreciated.

VA has a mouse control option, you can set it so it can click on the various panels for you, and for example select the fastest routes, or show your current location... I use this with my monitor when using TrackIR, I haven't tried it with the Rift yet, don't know if it will work since the pixels you set as coordinates are not fixed in the rift when you move your head. I'll try it when I can.

Huh? Galaxy map is amazing in the rift. Map the controls to your flight controls and voila! You "Fly" around the map.

the first thing you need to do is tilt you view just slightly upon entering the map, it's a known issue. Once that is done control is precise and just fly around the universe.

I'm waiting for the day, when we can use multiple Rifts. So my wife can stand next to me in our cockpit, looking out of the window while we supercruise through the galaxy.

That shouldn't be the case if you use the DisplayPort interface and not HDMI. My 4k monitor runs at 60Hz ok as a single large screen through it.

Echoing the experience of drkaii, there have been several times in game where I felt as if I were in a second reality. This was most pronounced sitting next to the Voyager 2 probe listening to the transmission with the engines turned off after participating in the Abraham Lincoln Memorial event. Taking it one recursive step further, there was a moment when I felt like my consciousness was actually out there with the real Voyager 2 probe in deep space, connected to the reality of it through the in game moment. It was potent, unexpected and lingered with me for some time.

I wonder at the kinds of experiences future generations may have as VR and AR technologies improve.

With the Galaxy Map in the Rift, I find it manageable with the controls mapped to the HOTAS and once spent several hours just traveling around inside of it and viewing the galaxy from different angles, zoom perspectives and locations. And imagined a wide-eyed Carl Sagan standing inside of it with his jaw hanging open.

Even with its problems, the Rift is an amazing piece of technology.

ill echo that as well, its just very insane when you get "pulled" from the experience.

like when someone comes in a sees you in your "ship" haha

Did you try this? Sounds interesting, although I'm fine doing it with the selection buttons.

Me too, I'd love to park my wife in the lower seat of an Asp and take her into deep space with me. Two problems I forsee are that 1) you'd need roughly double the horsepower to do this as you are essentially running two separate games (VRAM should be the least affected though) and 2) it would be very sickening for the guest because part of the reason we don't get sick is that we are controlling the motion ourselves. If you are looking around and being moved all over the place it will certainly induce nausea.

If only he was here to see this. Nice post man. You know how to play this game correct, that's for sure.

I remember on my first day, every time I'd take the rift off and see the wall in front of me, my brain would go WHOA for a moment there.
