VR Noob asking stupid VR question. Oculus Rift CV1. Please help . . .

Hello fellow Commanders.

Well after much anticipation my new Oculus Rift CV1 arrived this morning.

I have set it up, seen the introduction clips of the animals, the alien (a Thargoid ?), the skyscraper and the dinosaur. All very impressive indeed.
I only bought the thing to play Elite but I can't seem to get it to work.

My current setup is 2 x ASUS GTX 970's in SLI driving 3 x 22" monitors, giving a desktop resolution of 5040x1050.

I start Elite and put the headset on. I see a white screen with spares and the message that "EliteDangerous64.exe is taking a long time to load. Remove the headset and check the app".

I have ticked the box that says Allow Unauthorised Apps to run.

What else do I need to do ?

Please help and point me in the right direction

Thanks in advance

Chris

Take headset off.

Open ED.

Go to settings -> graphics settings.

Use the drop down box for "3D", which is NOT in the display settings (cheeky buggers), and set to "HMD (Headhpones)".

Enjoy.

As above, see here:

It's been a while since I got mine set up but here goes...

If you take the headset off, do you see ED running on your monitor? If so, go into the graphics settings and change 3D mode to "HMD Headphones" and you shuld be good to go. Note, if you're running the standard install of Elite (i.e. installed via Oculus Home) you'll need to manually change the audio to "Rift Headphones": for Windows 7 just click the speaker icon in the system tray and select Rift Headphones from the menu that pops up. Windows 7 may be more involved than that; I can't remember.

For easy switching between VR and 2D I recommend downloading Dr. Kaii's excellent EDProfiler. It enables you to set various graphics options and save them as profiles to select from before launching the game. You'll still have to do the audio manually though.

EDIT:

D'oh! Ninja'd

Get EDProfiler though - you won't regret it.

Another vote for EDProfiler, I couldn't live without it.

But no need to switch audio manually. Now that EDProfiler allows custom files to be run I have set it up to start/stop the Oculus service, switch the audio playback device and make me a cup of coffee.

Thanks to all of you.

I just cannot believe the scale of it. My anaconda is huge in VR. Never before I have gone through the letterbox so slowly and so carefully.

I just did a quick planetary scan mission, boy did the buggy bit make me feel queasy.

The bit where you turn your head for the nav and system panels just feels totally weird. I'll get used to it.

I shall download that profiler software this evening.

Once again, thank you for all your help.

Chris

Not sure where it is in settings but there's an option to lock horizon which should help, also I find drive assist off works better for me.
Have fun - wait till you exit a station and see an Earth like world floating above you, totes took my breath away that first time :)

o7 Commander!

It's epic isn't it, go ice mining, you'll get [redacted] all profits but the view  in fact if you just want to jump right to an ice ring just do the tutorials in VR.

And yes get EDProfiler, I could live without it but it be a grubby kind of half life! :)

No go and get in to a small fast ship (Sidewinder with performance enhanced thrusters) and buzz some canyons.

ooh!

Edit
Voice Attack is your VR's best friend!

Thank you AndysonofBob.

I am already an experienced VoiceAttack user and it works fine with the headset on.
I have already made a VA message saying: "Sorry I can't talk to you - I'm wearing a VR headset". :)

However, there is one absolutely show stopping fault with the headset. I am seriously going to have to reconsider my purchase:

Why ?

I can't get a beer glass, or even the can for that matter, anywhere near my mouth 'cos the headset's in the way.

So come on, you experienced VR users, what's the solution - AND DON'T SAY "GIVE UP DRINKING" . . . . . . . :)

Chris

You need to go into the options and change the SRV Camera to lock onto the horizon. It makes SRV operations in VR somewhat less wonky.

Also setup your UI Panels to open when you press a button and not come on when you focus on them. Since you'll be looking around - a lot - they can be annoying when they open automatically.

As far as getting refreshments in VR goes, you need to use straws.

Thanks BoxxMann, pretty obvious really now you mention it. Saved the day (or night in this case) :)

Thanks.

Bottled beer works like a champ as long as they are "long necks"

Cheers

Thanks.

Bottled beer is OK as well, it's just anything with a radius of about the size of a cup/can or bigger causes problems, or use a straw as suggested.

EDIT - Ninja'd again :D

Switch to Jin Tonic and use a straw. Tastes better anyway. But make sure your glass is standing steady. I don't know how many times I spilled a glass over my desk while in VR.

Attach a bottle holder to the leg of your desk, and get a long straw :D Or perhaps hang it on the side of the Rift, like those baseball hats with built in drink holders [haha]

3 nights ago I clipped the toast rack while dodging a Beluga, bounced off the floating holo projector thing outside, boosted by mistake and just survived punching into the side if the station. At the same time, I knocked my rum & coke over onto my keyboard which killed it.

My solution was to get one of those 1L sports drink bottles with the pull up cap. I can jam ice cubes through the opening to keep it cold and if I do knock it over and haven't closed the cap, only a small bit gets out before I can grab it. And you can drink without raising your headset. :D
