VR Space Legs

I'm seriously considering the Rift S if a good sale can be found come Black Friday. One of the things swaying me in this direction is VR "space legs" in Elite Dangerous, as demonstrated by Obsidian Ant in the video below. I know it's a simple thing, but to be able to walk around my bridge to take in a cool vista through different sections of the canopy, or to get out of my SRV to look at a crashed satellite up close, well I just find that really attractive.

So my question is, how does this work? Obviously ED doesn't support space legs in the traditional sense, and I while I can walk around a little IRL using my rift, I can't walk my way out of an Anaconda down to the ground below. How are VR people placing themselves outside their ships and SRVs as seen in this video?

ps - feel free to tell me how amazing this is, because I'm still a bit hesitant to pull the trigger.

On rocky worlds, where you can find some beautiful canyons and cliffs, I often park up in the SRV on the edge of them using my Pimax 8K and step outside of its bubble cockpit to admire the view. The wide field of view in this respect is just awesome (don't know what the Rift S's FoV is, but in VR planetary sight seeing can be majestic).

The only downside is that I can only walk as far as the lead/tether and the walls in my home office will allow.
 
When I want to go for a pseudo-EVA, I use the external camera suite on the lowest speed setting and try to be gentle on any view slewing movements. I can usually keep a good “walking” height above planet surfaces without the nanny-blur kicking in.

Inside the ship you’re limited by your physical space as the cameras are static look-arounds only.

Edit: ...and as requested, it’s proper amazing is that VR, I’ve never regretted my “oh it’s too expensive” dithering purchasing decision when I got the Rift CV1, or moving on to the Rift S.

In OA's video, it seems like he's looking around using VR's head-tracking. Does the external camera give you this option, or is OA using some other trick to teleport outside his ship? I recommend watching the video I linked to for context.

Yes, you’ve always got full look-aroundability whatever you’re doing in game. For example, Station menu screens are a projected, curved display in front of you, you can still look behind yourself at the cockpit bulkheads if you want. Some functions like the System & Orrery views are out-of-cockpit views, but you can look around into the endless void behind.

The camera suite still functions the same but you can look around as well - I’ve got a rubbish-ish EVA video here:

...that I did a while back. That’s basically me pushing forward on the controls, with the occasional “lower height”. All the turning and looking around was courtesy of the creaking vertebrae.

So if I put the camera under the ship, does it still do the dumb "blur" thing, or can I actually "walk" around under my ship when it's on the ground?

Also, can I actually walk in camera mode? As in, walk around IRL and my view will track me 6DoF?

The camera will still blur and the invisible box is still around your ship to stop you getting too close. You can walk around though in real life, which lets you get a little bit closer to things, so if you get up to the modesty-blur limit then you can peep behind the curtain up to the limit of the headset cable and have a look through doors and bulkheads.

Why do you need 20/20 vision? My vision isn't that good and it still works for me. Also you can get prescription lenses for the headset.

It dawns on me that I could just park my SRV under my ship and then "get out" and walk around. I could even jump my SRV on top of my larger ships and walk around on top! I've always wanted to walk on the upper deck of an Anaconda :D

He might be talking about the "fuzziness" of VR resolution compared to a nice, crisp 2D monitor. This is my biggest gripe against VR.
