VY CANIS MAJORIS Revisited

Following on the original thread Caleb and I decided to check in the Galaxy Map... why, visiting such a star must be an enterprise worth of a thousand songs!

Alas, after reading the fuel mechanics (one fuel unit/ton per LY) I think that possibly my children´s children will eventually reap the joy of such a sight... :D Well exagerating a bit but even asuming a ship s tank is 50 units/tons it ll take (37 full tank jumps or so...)

Behold... Canis Majoris and its frikking 1800+ LY from LP... (never mind crossing the galaxy... good luck for those in the great expedition thingie!)

btw there are red supergiants much closer than VY CANIS MAJORIS, for example Betelgeuse.

But VY CANIS MAJORIS will be interesting. :)

:D I looked for it ages ago but the search never came up with anything at the time.. glad to see it in game...

Hmm do I see a Party of Intrepid Explorers; Holistic Original Lasting Experience Otherwise known as PIE HOLE, joining forces to get there? Or will it every man woman and spacecraft for themselves?

I do hope that the impression of size is felt when transitioning between differing planets

Indeed, I really hope that FD has thought about a seriously big impressive way to appreciate that thing! I mean... simply jumping in system to a scalable larger distance from the star would just mean we see it with a similar size to the stars we see now, just farther away. No, no, no, no.... it has to be different, it has to be frikking awsome. FD, make it so. :D

For example going to super giants and you feel like you're next to a wall. I guess that depends on the hand waving physics of the mass lock system. Shame to have that variation in size but not appreciate it.

Does Frontier's procedurally generated galaxy even simulate things like different luminosity and size (and collor)?

From all the videos ive only ever seen yellow, sun-like main sequence stars.

I heard Virgin Galactic will be operating a replacement bus service there for the foreseeable future due to engineering works....

1800 LY is actually quite closer than i expected.
Most estimates state that the star is about 3000-5000 LY away.

Anyway, i think it's size may get apparent when we try and fly by it.
It's diameter is about 6000 light seconds.
So even if we were going at 20c it would still take 5 minutes to just pass it.

Our velocity and distances are really the only point of reference we have in space, since you can't just place something next to it to compare.

If you disregard both of those, then a hypergiant will mostly look just the same as a red dwarf. So travel time will have to be the thing that tells us how big something seems.

You know, all things considered ED propulsion technology would be a modern engineer's dream! one lightyear to a ton of fuel? as opposed to modern requirement of several hundred/thousand tons of fuel just to reach low earth orbit?

its beautiful.

Fingers crossed that FD will bring that detail. :)

Indeed, but i was thinking also of other more "size appropriate" effects like some especial ominous and epic sound effects... I dont know.
