Wait, wait, wait! So even when you`ve bought everything you still have to buy the Beta?

Nobody else is going to test it. If we don't test, it gets released as is. It's paying them for doing their work for them.

It's like getting your oil changed, and then being charged to check the dipstick yourself before you leave. It's sad.

However, I'm a free market capitalist. There's one born every minute. Just glad I'm not one of them.

They have an internal QA team. Obviously it's going to be tested with or without us. It's just best to have some help with a system this complex.

Easy. Wait until the early access Beta is finished and then you will be playing a beta version of 2.3 for the next month or two until FD throw in a bug fix and balance patch. That's how it works.

Nasty, nasty.

As for the OP: FD originally only permitted beta access to the backers or lifetime pass owners. A lot of people cried "but I want it, too" - so they added it to the shop for a nominal fee. Nobody forces you to buy it, nobody will think about whether you buy it or not, and it won't make a jot of difference once the upgrade goes live, because what happens in beta stays in beta - you can't take anything you achieved in beta with you back to the live server. All you get is a chance to play around with some new toys and some new bugs earlier than in the live version.

As for entitlement: you are entitled to exactly what you bought. Which doesn't include "everything" - or beta access. If you buy a big mac, you're not entitled to free fries.

You know zip Jon Snow. This update is YUGE. You glance at the changelog?

They have in-house QA testers, but there is also a need to be live in the wild.

Most of us pay for Beta so we can try new stuff first and waste each other for no cost and lastly: try to break the game.

Poor simile, its nothing like that. It's a choice not a maintenance.

Its hip for new players who are unfamiliar with the style of this game to be cynical, because <cool> <louche>

Brilliant marketing and monetization of FD: instead of paying Beta Testers, have Beta tester pay you.

I don't mean this sarcastically. It's truly brilliant. (I work for a software company, where this would be unheard of)

I would bet you money they have internal testers working on the beta.

Us beta folks are very bad at testing things because we are too busy having lulz

(I work for multiple software companies...not having testers is suicide)

100% actual testing is boring as heck, repetitive and without any rewards, just like ..... Oh wait a minute :D

unheard of? Ultima Online did a paid beta 20 damn years ago.

They were referring to having paid beta testers be the only testers during the beta. Which would be ludicrous. The paid beta is mostly a load test. They have their own testers who get paid a wage to keep them impartial and diligent.

Maybe it's time to invest in some FD shares, they are good at making money it seems :D

No Starbucks wont do that, because someone can get burned and then they will get sued BECAUSE the coffee was HOT (never heard of hot coffee before) :D

Its doing their job and paying them to do it. It's ethnically bankrupt.

You've just paid a car dealer to get in the car you already bought and make sure the AC works.

They're getting people to pay them to do their work for them with no guarantee anything they say matters, then it all goes away in a few weeks. Like I said, bravo lol.

Right! [rolleyes]

The AWS fees for the Beta server time costs FD how much per hour? I seriously doubt they are making anything close to a profit from everyone's 5 buck investment into the Beta cycle's overhead costs.

But of course... The whiners never stop for a second to consider anything other than their own myopic viewpoint on the subject.

The community petitioned FD hard to make the Beta access available to NEW players beyond the core backer community. Frontier listened and gave the community what they wanted.

Then you clowns stumble in and start crying about having to pay for something FD didn't even offer originally. Access to something that has absolutely NOTHING to do with your ability to play the game you purchased, and is a voluntary opt-in extra.

Priceless. [wacko]

if it was doing their job, we'd be forced to put in regular hours and file decent bug reports. We are under no such obligation and I seriously doubt 98% of beta players even bother to file the vaguest of bug reports.

Your assumption that Frontier doesn't have their own QA staff to test during beta is baseless and not from any sort of fact.

I'm certainly not doing their job because I paid for a privilege and not for work.

Yeah nickel and dime'ing is an awesome thing.

No one is compelled to do it to keep anything or to stay up to speed with anything.

Nickel and diming involves things you must pay for or are strongly compelled to do so else suffer loss of quality.

For example, old cars will nickel and dime you until you could have purchased a new car. You have to spend the money to maintain the car or else it degrades or breaks...you don't have much of a choice. That's nickel and diming. Or, selling ice cream but then charging extra for the spoon. See what I mean?

Overhead is a part of running a business. They're charging people to make sure something they already bought works.
