Waiting 300 seconds to download data... so I wrote this post in the meantime

While waiting to get scanned and murdered, no doubt!
It's not even illegal. I used to stand in the middle of the lounge downloading their cat meme and air quality report, and it was ok.

Usually, when you have a timer like this, it is because it's illegal, so there is a risk. They can scan you, it doesn't matter. Just don't move.

There's something seriously wrong if they think that's engaging gameplay. You can't even move away from the terminal, you literally have to just wait for 5 minutes, it's a terrible terrible mechanism.
Maybe they thought it would be nice to give the players a small respite in the midst of all the other busywork you have to do for getting the suit and weapon upgrade materials. FD is just looking out for our well being, man.

It breaks the peak gameplay loop of breaking and entering into people's hab module to steal their cat meme, not going to lie.

I'm jealous, the max I had was 2minutes. And you had 300s.
That seems like peak gameplay. Did you happen to have a video of it ? I'd like to see a stream if you do it again. Seems highly enjoyable.
Unfortunately, I didn’t capture the gameplay, it was just too hectic. But I can take a screenshot of a wall next time and you can stare at it for 5 minutes.
Then for another 150 seconds. And then 60.
It really captures the moment.

(when you hear a buzzer, stare at the art)

I've done a bunch of these power on missions now and have NEVER once had pirates come in after me. The only time was in the tutorial. Has anyone else had any baddies drop in? Wondering if it's bugged.
Same here. Since the download itself is not illegal anymore the only illegal thing is if you do it in a restricted area. But then as others pointed out even 60 seconds feels like an eternity.

Waiting 300 seconds in an empty settlement is just not good gameplay.

You know, I figured out the development process FD has had with many of the features Elite has. They start with a decent enough premise, like weapon modding, where they ask you to collect some stuff in order to do that. Fair enough. But then someone asked the question of if there should be some additional curve to it, for not to make it too straightforward. Then another person chimed in, saying, maybe some of the stuff should be extremely rare, for reasons. They pondered that a bit, then someone shouted, they could also make the requirements incremental so that it wouldn't feel like doing the same thing 4 times in a row. They all then patted each other in the back, stated they had created the most involving gameplay cycle ever and went to a pub to have a pint.

Why do I have to wait 300 seconds doing literally nothing while I download a bunch of

I guess it's the same reason why we don't have a button to get all the gear upgraded in a single click neither we have an instant travel system across the galaxy.

One could argue that times for download in an empty settlement would be quicker because a lot of systems are not being used. I kind of like the suspense when doing theft etc. but agree that in an abandoned settlement it's a bit much.

It’s the original Horizons and Guardians engineering grind all over again.
Both have been adjusted according to players feedback but then for some unexplained reasons FDev have done it for the third time.

I don’t mind the data and mats gathering. The idea is fine by me.
What I don’t like are these arbitrary obstacles that FDev insist have to be there.

This waiting time, horrible RNG, not being able to trade data (even though you can in Horizons), NPCs not giving any loot (even though ships in Horizons do), getting one material at a time (even thought you get 3 in Horizons), night vision not present on suits and so on and so on.
It makes the whole data/mats gathering awful and you definitely don’t get a lot of things with “organic gameplay”.

The big problem for me is, that it seems the devs rarely stop and ask if what they are doing is fun for the player. They seem to more concerned about how they can make things take longer instead of if the gameplay cycle involved is actually fun.

Frontier have spent a lot of - well, some at any rate - money developing this DLC. Presumably they'd like to make a bit of it back, in which case why add off-putting wastes of time to the game?

Well, on occasion, such as Apex Interstellar taxis, they have to for consistency with the rest of Elite.

But this particular bit of time-wasting serves no purpose other than wasting players' time - which ISTR a dev once promised us they didn't want to do.

What kind of gameplay is this?
I restored the power in an empty settlement - there are no alarms, no enemies, no danger to be had.

Why do I have to wait 300 seconds doing literally nothing while I download a bunch of data?

I would understand when trying to steal data that it gives a sense of urgency but in an empty settlement?
It's just a waste of time, nothing else.

Ah, another 140 seconds to go...

EDIT: Found another port in the same settlement... another 150 seconds added to waiting time. Fun!
EDIT2: And a third port with a 60 seconds waiting time.

That is 510 seconds, over 8 minutes thankyouverymuch.
In the year 3307, we've upgraded wireless communications to a low version of bluetooth?
