Want to engineer Beam Lasers

Why Grade 5 Efficient Lasers? Are Overcharged not better for most things? I'm sort of new to engineering and a lot of people are telling me to get overcharged Beam Lasers

Beams use a lot of power and generate a lot of heat. Overcharging them just amplifies these drawbacks.

Efficiency, though, negates the drawbacks and makes beams awesome, especially if you add thermal vent.

I've been rocking long range + thermal vent, IMHO long range is the way to go, it eliminates the damage drop off, you get full damage all the way out to 6km when until the target goes out of range. I love seeing ships try to run and taking them out with lasers at long range just watching that hull % drop :)

I like long range too on certain builds, if I want a long range weapon I prefer beams for instant hitscan and good damage.

I'm with you on LR + TV. I have a Cutter and the sooner I can start hitting the other ship the better.

Depends on how you intend to use them. Overcharged if you can get that to work (could be a big 'if' though, depends on your build) but I always go efficient rather than long range. Much reduced distro draw and I'm confident in my ability to keep an enemy within 1100m most of the time (the limit where the drop off in damage with efficient crosses the line where long range does more damage), so long range wouldn't be an optimal choice for me.

Depends on the build big time, you're right about that. I like a mix sometimes. Efficient on bigger ones like 3s and 4s overcharged on 1s and 2s. Thermal on everything. My chieftain i think has 4 beams and 2 mc and is a popsicle of rapid death

I'm guessing Oversized Overcharged Beam Lasers cook your ship, then? I've been wondering which mods I should add to my Vette's Beam Lasers, and I had initially decided on Oversized and Overcharged... but maybe Overcharged and Thermal Vent would be better

Thermal vent is one of the best experimental effects in the game, it's hard to recommend the other options over it.

It depends on build, but if you're talking about the twin huge hardpoints then I really think you'll want thermal vent. Instead of cooking your ship, you'll be able to cool it down.
