Newcomer / Intro Wanting to add a new account via Steam

I'm a current ED player and purchased mine in Beta via the Frontier store. Now my son wants an account but currently we only have one machine. I see you can purchase elite via Steam (Humble) for £21.00 this week. Is this worth doing, would it conflict with my account, are the launchers messy.. or should I just pay up and buy from Frontier and use the same launcher?

If your son has his own user account on your computer, you can buy it whereever. The two installations won't clash, you will both have your own Elite on your accounts.

The second option (running both accounts from one launcher) tends to get annoying, because you have to verify your account via email every time you switch accounts. But on the other hand it saves space, because you can have only one copy installed.

I have multiple accounts - one of them was via Steam (a gift) and I run it directly, not through Steam - so there should be no issues your end.

I let Steam install the game to the Steam Library on my machine - so it is a separate install, but I just made a shortcut to the EDLaunch.exe in that directory - so run E D without Steam running.

this thread explains how to run from the same installation....

Am unsure if you'll need to link the Steam ID to your Son's Frontier account via the store, found here: https://www.frontierstore.net/frontier_partnerkeys/

The important thing to note is, it's the Frontier Account that grants permission to play, not steam itself so when that's setup it's fairly irrelevant if you use Steam or Frontier's launcher to actually play.

In your situation, you can purchase the game on Steam and either download a separate copy of the game, or set the extant installation as the install directory. The first option is simpler; the second lets you use the initial install so you don't need to download anything.

Basically, all the Steam version does is give you a second key.
