So, perhaps this is something that's already been considered by Frontier, but I thought I'd put it through; just in case 
With Odyssey having a whole new element to combat and now the ability for full on wars on planets, I thought this would be a great time for Frontier to take full advantage of this and give something great to the player base.
The news with Jupiter has made me think about how wars could be more than just conflict zones, and give the ability to another "I was here" label in the form of medals. I thought that it would be cool if Jupiter ends up being a rally to commanders to fight on both sides - though my beliefs are that Fdev will be including this in Odyssey as the timing is too good not to be. Then, after a war, all players that took part are given a medal of contribution visible to them on their Codex and perhaps even a public viewing. However just using Jupiter would feel like a missed opportunity so here's how it plays out in my head beyond Jupiter:
1) Galnet posts about a political conflict happening
2) a few days later, Galnet posts how the political conflict turns to actual conflict
3) a week or two weeks later Galnet posts how the war has become an everlasting stalemate and both sides (or one side) is requesting Galactic-wide Commander (i.e players) aid.
Not only would this add another area to enjoy in Elite, but also encourage more players to check out Galnet - not to mention our pretty medals! Plus the impacts on the BGS of the game by allowing players to shape (not create) politics or even just to allow Frontier making players feel they have more impact to the political climate if the wars are only one-sided. Beyond medals and Galnet, this would play mostly like conflict zones; you'd turn up whilst the event is active, fight for however long you want and go to stations to claim rewards from the faction you fought for.
The only thing I fear here is Galnet just becoming a post-board for war so I'd hope that wars would only be every couple of months if Frontier did take my idea on board. I'd hope Galnet primarily stays as a way to immerse players in the BGS as well as hint future updates and I know this is Frontier's intent with Galnet anyway. Medals would also feel very unwanted if there were wars everyday or week, so every few months when it fits into the story would be great in my opinion.
