War... what is it good for?

Just curious what effect a war has on a system.

My "home" Fed faction did a Boom and spawned into a neighbouring Independently controlled system. The Indi system has two Indi factions plus a smaller Fed faction. The two Fed factions are now at War (War, not Civil War).

So I thought I'd help my 'invasive' home Fed faction out by joining up (after all, I'm an Ensign in the Fed Navy!). After three days and 75 combat 'kills'/bonds against the incumbent Fed faction there's been no change in the influence and no change in my status with the Fed I'm shooting at.

By comparison, in the weeks prior to the War I was happily doing missions for 'my' Fed faction, and taking then abandoning missions for the two Indi factions. I'd also hang around the Nav Beacon and shoot wanteds from the Indi factions. The system is very quiet, with less than 10 player ships per day. In two weeks we moved from this:

Indi 1 : 50.7%
Indi 2 : 23.0%
Fed 1 : 16.8%
Fed 2 : 9.5% [mine!]

To:

Indi 1 : 44.7%
Indi 2 : 22.1%
Fed 1 : 16.7%
Fed 2 : 16.5% [mine!]

Plus, I'm now on Unfriendly terms with the two Indi's. "My" Fed faction has near doubled its control, and I'm going to surmise a lot of that's down to my efforts in a quiet backwater.

What gets me is that taking/abandoning maybe 30 missions has got me "Unfriendly" with the Indi's yet popping 75 ships from the other Fed faction hasn't changed a thing. Plus in the last three days when I've been in combat and not doing/abandoning missions the influence percentages haven't moved a jot.

So I come back to, war, what is it good for? I'm not seeing the impact on the gameplay, or control of the system, in the way lesser player actions (mostly missions) have seemed to move the needle a lot more.

I cant believe this isnt here yet ^^

War - what is it good for? Answer is simple. It is good for profit and taking imaginary advantage upon defeated fraction.

I recently did the same in a System and easily made several hundred Kills, cashing in Million after Million in Combat bonds.
The total effect doing nothing but that over several days was...... 0.1% Influence change.

Civil war actually ended after that with no winning side (affected Stations remained in the hands of their original owners).

So either the System of counting the bonds into Influence/Conflict progression is bugged (backlogged without going into effect?) - or as a lone Player it's physically impossible to affect the outcome, even with a very dedicated and concentrated effort over multiple days.
At least the Faction I was fighting for went from Neutral to Allied, so they definitely took note of my persistent support.
( On the downside, my Joystick hand went from healthy to seriously sore in the progress, actually limiting my HOTAS time in the end :p )

Very useful to know it's not just me then. Thank you.

Thank you, a useful post. And from Michael Brookes' post... "War – 2 – Triggered by and invading minor faction reaching a high enough influence level. Decreases standard of living, wealth and security for the system while active. Influence changes only apply to the involved parties and are only applied from combat missions or actions."

So, if my surmise is correct, and I've helped the invading minor Fed faction boost its influence, then basically I started a war... gulp.

Combat bonds have no effect on the faction influence numbers. Fighting within the combat zones WILL cause a faction to win or lose a station IF you 'win' or 'lose' the war. You had a civil war, you fought on one side, but did not meet victory conditions and lost the war. Thus nothing changed within the system.

No one knows the exact numbers needed to win a Civil War in a system, yet. And yes, your actions caused the deaths of hundreds or thousands of NPC's on those planets and stations you dock at! Welcom to Elite.

How dumb does a person have to be to think "hey, let's resolve these ideological conflicts with LOTS OF GUNS!"?

And because it's election season let me chime in with 'Trident', 12 billion actual pound notes for something you would have to be really dumb to think solves anything.
