Warning! A large friends list will kill your frames per second!

When you have no friends you assume nobody reads your posts and just post the text instead of the link. Thank you for reading my post friend

Eeyore? Is that you? ;)

Feel free to throw me a friend request once this fps nonsense is over. :)

- - - Updated - - -

I'm on xbox, same issue. I think you may be right and is related to friends but I don't know if having a lot is the cause or just bad connections between two people. For instance - Solo works fine for me. Open worked fine until a few friends came online then got the frame rate drop. Switch back to solo, fine again. Jumped into private group, fine. Until one of my friends joined the private group and immediate frame rate drop. We were the only two people in the pg at the time. So perhaps it isn't the number of friends you have but rather who you are trying to connect with? Just a thought.

Apparently it's number of active friends and distance. The info is all there in the bug thread. But a fix should be right around the corner.

It better be. :)

16 fps?! Luxury. My old COMMODORE PET cud only do 3 on a good day. With eight shades of green, un all.

Eight shades of green! Luxury!

My speccy only had two - and the RF modulator broke, so I could only tell what the machine was doing by sticking my tongue on the z80's pins. I wasn't much into graphics, as that meant licking the ULA :(

As for the friends list problem - if they can fix the rather strange constant beaconing of what everyone on your list is up to, and limit it only to update when you actively open your friends or comms menus, I wonder if that will introduce "burstiness" lag when the game engine takes a hit as it waits for a (hopefully compressed) list for the comparator.

THE CAUSE OF THE ISSUE HAS BEEN FOUND:

No, it's not related to the number of friends in your list. It's related to their distance your online friends are from you on the galaxy map, and where they are on the map, and primarily on impacts Open mode players. For some reason, if they are near the center of the galaxy, and very far away, then you will get a 30-70% drop in FPS. But only in the cockpit view, and only if all parties involved are in highly populated servers like Open or Mobius.

Frontier has diagnosed the issue and a fix is incoming:

In the meantime, if you have FPS drops, just ask the friends in your list who are online in Open and are far away (>5000 LY) to please switch to Solo or to a small private group until the game is patched. They can still chat with their friends while in Solo, and it's not like they're going to meet anyone out there accidentally any way. Alternatively, if the deep space explorer friend is a relative stranger you met once and will likely never talk to again, you can just unfriend them and solve the problem instantly.

"unplayable 40fps"?

Is TV unwatchable for you?
Your phone unusable?

40fps is good!

:p

(Joking of course, HMDs require super smooth FPS)

Luckily, i don't have many friends in ED. I may do a culling of the ones i haven't spoken too since before Christmas. Because i basically don't remember who they are. Lol

As per 2.3, anyone with lots of friends will suffer a huge fps drop!:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...-Rate-Killer?p=5387431&viewfull=1#post5387431

I've gone from 90 fps in my HMD (i5 6600k and asus 1080) to an unplayable 40 fps. Apparently all because of my friends list!

So if you're having problems with your fps, then take a look at your friends list and then head over to the bug section in the link above and make your concern heard.

The game has become unplayable for me. :(

Edit: A fix is on the way:

I get all the frames then as I only have 3 friends :D

Why on Earth would anyone want friends?

That explains it. The friend I referred to in my earlier post was about 1500 Ly from Sag A and I'm over at the heart nebula currently. Thanks for posting this, I will tell him to stick to solo for now o7

Deleted...I rebooted and it's no different for me. I had fiddled with Priority for ED in Task Manager which resets but lags your system.

Unplayable at 40fps... want to trade computers?? I play at 10-15 on bare bones minimum settings. I get 20 on a good day. PVP for me is a really neat trick, especially when I'm recording and drop to 8. Good point to the thread though, I have loads of friends in the core, and I did lose a lot of performance this patch, have to link it to them, thanks.

Hehe, so ED even runs on an electric tin can. That´s good to hear. Kudos for even rocording with it.

But for those with +60fps pcs it´s rather annoying. I can hardly hit a Type 9 with my plasmas. I´m glad they´re working on it, hoping for a quick patch (before 29th of April, FD!!!!!!!)

I play on an xbox capped at 30.

The struggle is real.

On me old laptop I play ED at 20fps and I've got really good at it. Heck I sometimes love playing it on the move yes it's not as good as playing on me desktop but it's playable to me after playing Elite back in the day on 8bit machines it was 60fps back then ;)

No problem here...used to have about 20 or so friends on my list that I used to wing up with. Unfortunately they all seem to have quit the game because I haven't seen even on of them for 6 months or so.
