WARNING FLASHING IMAGES

I think Fdev need to be carefull and get the flickering shadows fixed as soon as posible before someone has a sizeure because of the flickering lights.

Here is a small clip with flickering shadows that I see quite a lot on surfaces.

i'm pretty sure all video games include a warning about epilepsy and that you're on your own if you have epilepsy and choose to play the game. Since flashing images can be intentional or entirely unintentional due to a software/hardware bug that can occur at any time.

The person with epilepsy needs to be careful.

i've never seen that before. is this a common issue?
I used to get it all the time but not as much since v13... I use VR, and I've seen other VR users on Youtube with this problem too... it hasn't been enough to be game breaking, maybe 1-3 time in a full day of play. But I can definitely understand it being a major problem for people sensitive to it.

Never seen that either. If anything, shadows looks better to me since update 13.

Edit: I know it's an old trick but have you tried to flush elite graphics directory content ? (C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics)

The only thing I've noticed since update 13 is shadows perhaps popping in more widely at a set distance? But not flickering, and the detail and shadows themselves seem if anything better than before.

To be fair, I have seen some flickering shadows since update 13 but they were barely noticeable.

Also never seen it, I'm not a big visitor of settlements, but I've been in enough that if it was common I should have seen it.

To those saying they havent seen it.
It only happens to me when playing in VR.
which is quite worrying as Horizons is sold as VR supported but 4.0 is not VR ready. As you can see from the state of the shadows in VR.

So when Horizons goes to 4.0 will they remove the VR supported tags and remove Elite Dangerous from the Oculus store page ?
Would be such a shame as Elite Dangerous is or was rather, the best VR game I know.

Explination on how I know its only in VR. (for me)

I run the game using ED profiler to set the level of GFX settings and resolution etc, depending on if I am playing in VR or 2D.
To launch the game I have 2 shortcuts with differing command lines :-
1: launches the launcher and then I choose the version of the game to run in 2D using "steam://rungameid/359320"
2: launches the launcher but goes directly into the highes version of he game on the list in VR using "steam://launch/359320/VR"

So I can set the game to run in the same gfx profile for 2D and for VR.
Which I did to test if the 2D gets the flickering shadows when using the same settings as VR.
It doesnt.

Somthing about Elite in VR in 4.0 is causing the flickering shadows that I recorded.

This is a Confirmed and Acknowledged issue when the sun is low on the horizon:

I thought it was listed in the Update 13 patch notes as fixed but it would appear more fixing is required for VR 😅
Thanks for that.

It also happens to me in stations.

I know the recording quality is low but I am just recoding from the 800x600 window on my desktop NOT from my VR headset, as that requires more apps and time :)

Oh and in my FC :-

I've seen a lot of flickering of shadows in update 12, IMO update 13 appears to have improved the issue but there is still some flickering. Apart from VR vs no VR, have you considered it might be a difference in graphics options between the VR and pancake sessions?

Yeah, that's really bad. I'm sensitive to flickering but, for science, I started watching your video. Ten seconds in I had to stop due to nausea and looming headache. Fine again within a few seconds of stopping, but I would likely have been messily unwell if I'd continued to watch. I cannot actually recall the last time I saw a warning about flickering images, it used to be common on the box, but who buys games in boxes these days....or reads the fine print...

Generally, a correctly working game doesn't bother me, unless the fps goes below about 30, that make me feel unwell too, but it takes a couple of minutes. This flickering though is far worse. I've not seen it myself in-game, but I'm really not played much of late.

This does need to be addressed ASAP as it can cause major issues for those more sensitive than me.

I've had shadows that kept showing up, then disappearing, over and over, even when standing still. The speed was too slow to call it "flickering", but it's still wrong. :)
