WARNING- New Possible thargoid weapon

Hazardous substances detected is the Thargod weapon after unshielded hits

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...O-Killing-Thargoid-Solo-After-AX-Missile-Nerf

that makes perfect sense, the message appeared as it eventually shredded my shields as my incompetent fighter pilot ignored the giant rage monster perusing us. once the substance was detected there was about 30 seconds before things started shutting down permanently.

This 'weapon' also makes sense with the capitol class wreckages, they are unshielded. the thargoid could wipe out all vitals and suffocate crew within a very small time limit.

As a theory, could this 'weapon' be some sort of nano-bot/ organism that goes through and nibbles vitals? A perfect weapon for dealing with ships.....

I've survived one Thargoid attack while collecting a Tissue Sample, in an Anaconda. My shields lasted all of 5 seconds, but I cannot recall if I got this Hazardous Substance message. There was so much happening during the evasion (or at least it seemed like it), maybe I missed it.

Next session, I'll get in the Anaconda (which is now fully repaired) and do a reboot to see if the message comes up.

It just happened to me while in SC in a CG neighbor system. On the Info panel, a red icon and the message (Hazardous substance detected). I immediately dropped from SC and then nothing happened.

To be quite honest, this feels like a bug to me.

The patch note would look like this:

"Fixed a potential issue where corrosion damage could be applied to player ships erroneously under certain conditions"

I can confirm, the Thargoid has a new corrosive (missile?) attack, it eats away at hulls and modules. Having MRPs and an AFMU is pretty much a requirement if you want to best the current Thargoids in 1v1. I killed two tonight who each used this corrosive attack. The first was eating my cockpit faster than i could repair it, until I added some MRPs, but then had I less hull to deal with the bulkhead corrosion. So it's a bit of a balancing act. Would be very tough now to be able to scoop up the materials they leave behind unless you were in a wing, and some of your group wasn't hit, especially with that corrosion eating away at your remaining hull.

I doubt it's a bug. I am 99% sure I saw a new attack animation that accompanied the corrosion damage.

Besides, we were warned that the Thargoids would be adapting and an arms race would ensue. This is it. Frontier aren't going to spoiler the Thargoid adaptations on Galnet. That would be very uncool, and out of character particularly for this story line, which has always been led by player discovery.

perhaps its a type of SC distortion weapon that feeds of the FSD, moving the energy and terning it into Knetic on the modules

never had this happen to me

Had 2 more NPC pirate interdictions with "hazardous substance detected"-message while hauling cargo in Empire space yesterday. No module malfunction or damage, as frameshiftdrive was almost fully loaded both times when the message came up.

Going through the thread and my experiences gives me this conclusions so far:
- Thargoids have a new weapon/effect that can give you "hazardous substance detected" and eat away your modules.
- NPC pirates have a new weapon/effect that can give you "hazardous substance detected" and eat away your modules.
- Something can hit you in supercruise and cause "hazardous substance detected" and knock you out of SC.
- It would seem that your shields have to be down to get this effect.
- It would seem that it takes a moment after the hit until the substance eats enough hull to cause the message.
- High jump disables the substance.

Don't know NPC "toxic substance" message but I think you're correct about shields protecting against the new Thargoid version. High Wake doesn't remove the corrosion effect from the Thargoid attack however.

I have just spent the weekend in the CG for secret billionaires killing enough of the wanted to get in the top 10%
Had the 'hazardous substance' message pop up a couple of times and had things randomly crap out, usually my heat sinks and/or Shield booster!
Didn't think anything of it until now, just guessed it was some kind of new engineered weapon. but am now thinking something bigger is afoot after reading this thread.

Hmm is it a bug, or are human ships "infected" with a Thargoid "virus"? Maybe that's why they've been abducting human escape pods?

I've just had 'Hazardous Substance Detected' (I think) - I'm in the Bubble, not far from Irukama. I wasn't being attacked though, I was just rather too close to a star.

Nothing obviously bad happened. Shields were up all the time.

just had another hazardous substance in similar conditions, only this time I was past the star and in supercruise aiming at my next jump.
Suddenly a hazardous substance warning appears, screws my cargo hatch and drops 4 of my painite that I was taking to selene jean - just a little upset about that little occurrence!
Somehow I think this is more than a bug!

What was your heat level? I've seen people duplicate this by overheating to ~125%, but I'm also reading reports of this coming from just flying around, no thargoid materials, no over heating, nothing...

I wonder what the cause is?
