Was it worth spending over 1000 Australian Dollarydoos on stuff for Elite?

I originally bought my Thrustmaster Warthog Hotas and Saitek rudder pedals for DCS as well. I also use IR tracker. When I started playing this game, I naturally used them. Although I am relatively new to this game, I cannot imagine flying around without this control setup. This is a common thing among hardcore flight sim enthusiasts, so I am not surprised that many serious players of this game use this type of setup.

Aaaaand the EDTracker is dead. I wanted to rearrange how I had the box fixed to my headset. The usb plug just didnt seem to want to disconnect and then.... POP. The plug came free with the socket from the board still attached.

Hope the wireless one turns up soon!

PSA - Be EXTRA careful with your USB cable when connecting and disconnecting! It doesn't appear possible to connect Data+ and Data- direct from a cable to the board either, so no simple fix :(

And yeah, a Vive is on my hit list, but that's 1400 AUD I'm not convinced I should spend just yet!! :D
You know the Oculus rift is on sale, right? You know you want to...

Mate, you're doing it all wrong. Seriously. Get VR, there is no turning back after you see it. Take it from a TrackIR / cheapo TFlight Hotas X and driving force GT pedals user who migrated to Vive. IDK if the Rift discount is available in Australia, but if it is, get a loan and grab this oculus rift like right now. You will thank us later. Why Rift and not Vive? Well the price difference is actually killing any advantage Vive had over Rift - both are 1st gen VR with their pros and cons.

IDK why people are overpaying for EDTracker when cheaper solutions - basically soldering 3 IR LEDs and a 9V battery + switch and buying an used PS3Eye camera - are available. Anyway this is a sign - you have to buy VR :D

I have a VIVE VR, HOTAS Warthog, and Playseat setup and this was primarily for ED but I do like some other space flight games too. I do not use pedals but I do switch stick flight modes on an as needed basis in ED (between Roll/Pitch, Yaw/Pitch, and Lateral Strafe). I have considered getting separate pedals but I believe I would have a hard time justifying the additional expense personally.

Justifying the price of the VR setup is a tough one - There is currently a lack of range of good games that support it but that seems to be changing, give it another 3-4 years and VR will probably be an indispensable part of a PC Gaming setup.

Pure Head tracking solutions (like Track-IR) just seem to be a bit of a waste of money to me.

Disagree, these go far wrt. immersion and are actually cheap as peanuts compared to the price of the VR headset. I got mine ready assembled for under 25€ inc. shipping. The most expensive part is the ps3eye cam, and that is cheap too. Makes a real difference compared to mouselook.

That said... Its a waste of money compared to VR, that's true. OP mate get in touch with someone in Australia with a VR headset and arrange for an ED demo - you will be blown away by the experience for sure. And thankful we nudged you that way before the "summer of rift" discount is over :D

If OP is in Sydney, I'd happily demo...

Z...

I have bought Thrustmaster 16000m FCS just for ED. I bought Nvidia 1060 Strix for ED (to replace GTX660). I bought HTC Vive also but returned it as in the end it was too much money for something I would use so little. I have spent some 50 euros for IR tracking, but not using it currently.

And here I am now thinking whether it is worth to spend 1.25 euros for weapon colors...

ED is the reason I upgraded from a laptop to a custom-built desktop a few months ago, something I've not had for years. Spent over €2000 on "not just Elite" with absolutely no regrets :D

Over the next year I need to spend another €1000 or so to upgrade my HOTAS and peripherals a bit, and get the Vive when it comes down in price

and get the Vive when it comes down in price

I hate to say this as a Vive owner but... Get an Oculus+Touch in the Summer of Rift promo. Really. It's a game changer and it costs 450€ here and $399 in the USA. It's like buying a good quality monitor. Vive and Rift are both first gen, each not without quirks. Yes the Vive has tech advantage, but its price now is ridiculous compared to oculus (and you have to splurge another 140€ to get "deluxe audio strap" to get some comfort Oculus has out of the box).

HTC is pretty adamant when it comes to Vive price. They have said over and over again that they are "happy with the sales" and "have a great product" and also that they "tapped into the prosumer market" - arcades, real estate, heck even BMW bought some Vives for their design dept and probably for experimenting with sales in VR.

I think 899€ + 120€ for Audio Strap + 30€ shipping totalling to 1050€ is BONKERS compared to 450€ Rift. Sorry HTC, you lost that one. And Oculus already announced that after "summer of rift" the price will rise from $400 to $500 (US) and stay there (idk the € equivalent after promo, but something similar + VAT).

Get a Rift now, thank us later ;-)

I'd say no, but since you can use that stuff with other stuff, too, it might generally enhance your experience. Never buy stuff for just one instance of use - you might be served Engineers and end up with useless equipment.

I haven't bought any hardware at all for Elite Dangerous!

Because I already had my full CH HOTAS with pedals for FSX. And TrackIR. And the Xbox pad I use for the SRV I already had too! They just so happen to come in handy for Elite too, that's all!

My real problem is how much money I've spent in software addons for FSX over the years. If my girlfriend knew the actual numbers she'd be flabbergasted, but it's still much cheaper than buying my own airplane so I'm actually ahead of the game!
