my first objective in this game, as soon as i had a grip on my ship, was obtaining that permit. seemed obvious to me.

Oh man, I saw a screen grab of Marra's negative Empire Rep once. So jelly.
You can work it right down, but it floats back up to negative neutral if unattended.
Same with my Alliance Rep. I've had it much higher, but you can only get it all the way up by cashing in Alliance bounties, then it drifts back down.
Missions don't get you high either.

I am like this total weapons-grade toxic bore for the Alliance.

Elite has this great setup for galacto politics, but since there are no consequences, none of it matters.
I don't want to say "there must be consequences" because hey - blaze your own trail.
I just wish there was some in-game reward for this kind of uh pointless RP masochistic variant of ironman mode.
I get mileage out of it on the forums, and I dig the suspicion and hostility with which I am greeted at Fed and Empire stations.
But there's no reward for grinding your rep right down. (I think it might have been dumping all that biowaste at Dawes Hub - Achenar)

Is there a lore reason why permit locked systems are literally impossible to jump to? Do factions have access to some technology which allows them to selectively block FSDs?
It would be interesting if it was possible to trespass in restricted space. Particularly if there are ever enhanced stealth mechanics. Although I guess it would mean finding another way to zone off areas reserved for future content.
