Ok, gentlemen, thank you for the help.
I apologize for the rant. I SOOOO want to enjoy this game, but having to go to other players and outside resources for help with things that should have been explained in the tutorials is infuriating.
I hope to be patient from here on.... but I’m red-headed and Scottish.... so that probably won’t happen.

The in-game tutorials are extremely limited. Fortunately there's a tremendous community of 3rd party content creators doing Frontier's job for them. Tons of good resources here.

Regarding the sensors / power management hypothesis - wouldn't he get a "modules disabled" warning if that was the problem?
