The thing you MUST learn above all with this game is patience. And the willingness to put in the time to learn.

It isn't an instant-pick-up-and-play-easy-mode game. However. It IS rewarding if you put in some good old-fashioned elbow grease.

I won't call troll on the Star Citizen plug ;)

My guess? The modules aren't set up right. Go to the right panel under "modules". There's help videos on Youtube.. for pretty much anything related to Elite..
My Guess -

Clue1: OP said he was bounty hunting
Clue2: OP said there are no contacts at any station
Clue3: N00b in a small ship

Conclusion - his opponent shot out his sensors, which stops you seeing contacts. Reboot & Repair will get them working again. And the modules panel will tell you where the issue is.

(Though he said he self-destructed, which should have solved the issue, unless he went bounty hunting again ...)

And to the OP: Better to ask questions than post rage-y threads - telling people who are successfully playing the game how broken it is rarely gets many agreements ;) Threads asking 'why can't I do X' tend to get more useful replies.

Anyway - Welcome to the game*!

* assuming you haven't already quit to go play the far superior Star Citizen :)

When you die with modules turned off due to damage, it has been known (or was known in the dim and distant) for the rebought ship to have the newly fixed modules still turned off. Certainly doesnt happen every time.

Ok you said you wanted specifics. Let me see if I can brief, clear and concise. Otherwise this will be a book.

Platform: Xbox One
Day one...
After completing all of the tutorials, I am started in Dromi Station with the typical Viper. I decide to take it easy and do some simple data courier missions in order to learn the flight controls, how to use the maps, menus, and just get used to the basics. Courier missions are also good for learning FSD. It takes me three hours to complete my first mission. I had a difficult time getting to my target station. I over shot it, hit it, flew circles around it, you name it. When I finally auto-docked and turned the mission in, I was frustrated, but still willing to give the game a go.
Day Two...
More courier missions. At one point I exited FSD to soon, could not FSD again even after cool down. Fuel; check, mass lock; not mass locked, destination selected; check, full speed; check...Punch it Chewie! Nothing. So, stranded, unable to FSD I decided to asphixiate to at least spawn at the nearest station. Once respawned I try a couple more courier missions with success. I am getting better... sort of. I figure out how to approach my target in Supercruise then drop into real space about 6km to 8km, contact the station, auto-dock. Hey this isn’t bad.Boring as watching paint dry, but I am still learning. Oh hey!!! I have enough money to buy an Eagle!!! Yay me!!!
Day three...
I buy an Eagle. Out fit it with a multi-cannon, fuel scoop, and two armor upgrades. Entry level Bounty Hunter. I don’t want to sink to much money as I want to keep my “death tax” as low as possible, because I am probably going to get shot down.... a lot. I am glad I did. I run another couple courier missions to get used to the new bird. Log off.
Day Four...
I logged in to my controls being inverted. What the?? I did not ask for that? Ok, find the setting, change it, apply,.... still inverted. I spend the next two hours doing that same process again and again to no avail. When all else fails, log out then in. BINGO!!
Day Five...
Back to inverted. WHAT??!!! The setting says “Regular”!!!!!! I spend day five jacking with controls. I figure out that the controls are inverted due to an option about clicking the left stick flips your flight controls. What a silly option.
Day five is a waste.
Day six...
I check my flight controls, we’re good. I accept my first BH mission. Let’s go shoot something.
Jot Kaern is marked for death!!! I then spend the next two hours fiddling with the fire groups. Good Lord. I’m of to bed. I am still not quite understanding them.

I will post a Pt 2, this is a bit lengthy.
comments and tips on what you have read so far would be appreciated.

Have you ever had your sensors shot out? During 7000 hrs of play, I've had many modules shot out, but never sensors.

I think I understand your problem.
When you outfittd your new eagle you probably didn't buy it a new powerplant correct? So what happened if that's the case is when you bought new weapons, scanners, fuel scoop ect ect you had enough power when flying around without deploying systems so you thought you were good. When you went to go dogfight however, you exceeded your power capacity by deploying all those weapons and scanners (essentially turning them on from a standby/low power mode). When this happens the ship's module systems have an order of importance which dictates the one's that will be shut down to conserve power and the one's that will keep running which are marked as essential (You can select what you want set to important or not by ordering your modules numbers 1-4 [1 being the most important stuff, 4 being the first stuff to get shut down with powerloss] on the modules screen). It sounds like the ship shut down your sensors when you exceeded the power limit and that's why you couldn't target the pirate. You also may have deployed hardpoints near the station before docking resulting in the same problem.

Op the above post nailed it.. your over your power supply tolerance making the ship trip out modules randomly wen u go into combat...it'll shut down unimportant ones in combat like sensors etc. So go get a bigger distributor and power supply. Upgrading these should fix your in-game spurious issues. Are you in VR or 2D? I can help with the former. Now that your cosher hehe.

Hmmmm.... just deploying hard points pops a breaker? Strange. I will check it.

Stock Eagle power plan.JPG

This is the power plan for a stock Eagle...In the picture, it shows:

  • The modules equipped
  • Type (whether it is controlled/powered by Engines, Weapons, or Systems)
  • Priority - shows the modules power Priority of 1, 2, 3, and 4 in that order. This is something you can change in your ship, and here to determine how much power you can milk out of your system without losing something important when you pop the hardpoints.
  • PWR - Shows the total power output at the top (6.4 100%) then it shows the list of each mods power usage, the percentage of the total. At the bottom, the line graph shows your RET (retracted) and DEP (deployed) usage. As it sits, the stock Eagle uses 94.4% of its total power when the hardpoints are deployed. If you didn't increace your Power Plant, then there is a good chance that when you buffed up your ship, you are needing more power than your Power Plant (PP) can put out.
  • Lightning Bolts - Shows what is being powered when retracted and deployed. As it shows, deploying your hardpoints increases your power usage by 12.2%.

You can go to Coriolis, find your ship, go in and plug in what you currently have it loaded out with, and determine if your power consumption is too high when you have all your modules working. You can also play around with how to set your Power Priorities and what that does for your power needs.

It was a surprise to me when I was outfitting my Anaconda that if I added a Frame Shift Wake Scanner to my load out, it put me just 0.1 % over my power availability. That was even running an 8A power plant...

Go check out what your load out is, play around with your power priorities and you may find that by changing something around, you will be golden, or it may show you what your flaw is, and allow you to correct it.

Just my two credits worth...Your mileage may vary, see dealer for details.

Take Care and Check Six Commander! o7

Same thing happened to me when I first got the game. Sensors disabled and I was flying blind, exact same symptoms as you described OP. It might help if you find a group to show you the ropes. Then, you might end up like the rest of us, addicted to this God forsaken game o_0

May I also suggest power priorities. This is just how I do it, others may have different suggestions.

In combat vessels:
I put FSD, Thrusters, Sensors, Power Dist, Life Support in priority 1
I put weapons in priority 2
I put accessories like collector limpets, cargo hatch, scanners in 3
I put shield cell boosters in 4
Then fuel scoop, supercruise assist and docking computer in 5

This way when I deploy weapons, it should only take out 5, but if I have real problems, it'll take out 4 as well then I can troubleshoot and at least get back to dock while I increase my power plant.

I hope you get your problems sorted out. Trust me once you do there is a lot of fun to be had in this game. I have been playing about 3 months and having a blast.
As for Star Citizen I keep looking at it and thinking how great it looks and I should buy it. Two thing have put me off. It has the makings of a toxic environment. Apparently pad ramming is a thing in SC. While you you are inside the port having landed on the pad a random jerk will deliberately crash into your ship and destroy it. Similarly if you are on a planet mining or exploring a kind person will drop by and blow up your ship. No amount of “Git Gud” advice will help with that. It doesn’t help that the the number of places you can visit is quite small at the moment. Chances of anyone finding you on a planet in Elite are pretty small. Secondly the current revenue stream RSI are pursuing looks like a pay to win set up. With new ships released all the time that make the earlier ones obsolete. Those with the deepest pockets will have access to all the best kit. Shame as I really enjoyed Chris Roberts Wing Commander series.

Got my sensors shot out on my T7 once upon a time. I cried and cried and eventually killed myself. Then I learned a reboot can fix it enough to request landing so I cried.

Is there a resource that shows what stations have what upgrades?
Yes, eddb.io has that information (and a ton more).

Be warned, though, that module availability is not necessarily guaranteed - the states affecting the faction running the station can--and do--change, which can affect module availability. The data for EDDB is supplied by players running apps like ED Market Connector, so if a system is off the beaten path and hasn't been visited for a week, the data will be a week old.

I loved Wing Commander,

There are no contacts in range at ANY station I go to. I have rebooted, logged out then in, self destructed and asphyxiated myself.
This game is unbelievably frustrating. The targeting does not work, scanning does not work, now this no contacts horse crap.
This is a an ABSOLUTE WASTE of $60.

Hey,

Sorry you're running into issues.

I would suggest heading to the nearest High Res location in a Planet's ring and try combat there - easy to find and lots of fun - just point your nose at other ships and let the scanner tell you if they are wanted or not.

Just try not to die before turning in your bounties - like most things they are lost if you die.

And try not to shoot non-wanted ships - the authorities will put a bounty on you if you do!

Then maybe try a conflict zone - they can be a lot of fun too - just drop in and chose the winning side (if it's obvious) :)

Good luck!

PS - I also play Star Citizen, No Mans Sky, and Space Engineers and they are all fun. If you have the cash I'd recommend them all, but for anything on Steam I'd wait for a sale since most games can be purchased for 50% off.

Ok, gentlemen, thank you for the help.
I apologize for the rant. I SOOOO want to enjoy this game, but having to go to other players and outside resources for help with things that should have been explained in the tutorials is infuriating.
I hope to be patient from here on.... but I’m red-headed and Scottish.... so that probably won’t happen.
Again, thank you.
