WatchDog.exe?

watchdog ?

I have the ED client though steam. Since a few days ago when i shut the game down the screen goes black but wont shut down game window. i went into task manager and found a ext called watchdog, if i close down the ext the game screen shuts down. is anyone having this problem?

I was getting the same thing and did some research and it is part of Windows 7 through Win 8.1(not sure if Win 10 will have it) Wiki can explain it better then I can but it has to do with, quickly recovering from system errors that would normally crash your computer. You can do what is called "kicking the dog" and just "End Process" in task manager.

Watchdog is one of Elite Dangerous processes and if you kill it, the game would also be killed. If you need to kill the game, you can kill either watchdog or EliteDangerous32.exe

Great AVG saw it as a virus and removed it now the game wont run. Tried to reinstate the file but AVG has locked me out saying it needs to be checked by the developers at AVG.

I'd propose it should not be running to take up unnecessary system resources and that it should only belong in Beta & Alpha Testing.

Had this too, AVG removed it. Spyware. Maybe from devs. Needs comment on this as things are happening in my game

Today my virus checker just reported watchdog.exe as a threat. So now the ball is in your court Frontier!

No it isn't. If your AV of choice is too dumb to recognise a valid, digitally signed binary then you need to advise your AV vendor. I mean, no AV product has ever suffered from false positives has it...

FD should rename watchdog.exe to Outsider.exe..............

That's what's called a false positive.
Basically, something ( usually a piece of code similar to those found in a virus (no, that does not mean it's a virus) ) within watchdog.exe triggered your AV into thinking that watchdog.exe is at most a virus, or at least suspicious. Watchdog is neither, you can safely tell your AV to ignore it - you might also want to put the exe back on your PC because sending the crash log to FD helps them fix crashing issues.

Definition of false positive:
A false positive error, or in short false positive, commonly called a "false alarm", is a result that indicates a given condition has been fulfilled, when it actually has not been fulfilled. I.e. erroneously a positive effect has been assumed. In the case of "crying wolf" – the condition tested for was "is there a wolf near the herd?", the actual result was that there had not been a wolf near the herd. The shepherd wrongly indicated there was one, by calling "Wolf, wolf!".

A false positive error is a type I error where the test is checking a single condition, and results in an affirmative or negative decision usually designated as "true or false".

AVG just flagged this file and deleted it. Game still works tho.
It will do, it's not a required EXE to run ED. Watchdog is a separate EXE that monitors ED and allows you to submit crash reports to FD so they can find and fix the cause of the crash.

The real question is, why the heck does ED eats so much disk usage while in the main menu.
It's likely loading a lot of assets into memory from file in preparation for you logging in.
