WatchDog.exe?

Can someone check this please:

When I start Elite Dangerous, there is also a process called WatchDog.exe that starts - it closes when Elite does, so I guess they go hand in hand.

Is this the same for everyone else?

What is it?

I am a bit paranoid due to someone trying to spoof my identity last year.

I noticed this due to having to quit ED, due to the vanishing dock bug, using task manager.

'WatchDog.exe' is (AFAIK) the application doing Elite's crash dump generation and report uploading, but for your piece of mind it might be nice for some confirmation from Frontier (99.99% sure its part of the bug tracking mechanism though.)

I think it's the thing that does the crash report jobbie as and when you crash to desktop, and you get that white window saying "oopsie" and "please send a crash report".

I think the phrase "Dangerous.exe would like to make modifications to your system drive" that you get during install is faaar scarier.

Watchdog.exe probably serves the purpose to display the Play button when the game is not running anymore.

Yeah, I am sure it is fine, but having something in the description column other than its name would have helped too :)

I can confirm the watchdog file is in the Elite installation folder, inside something like this:

(off the top of my head)

c:Windows\%appdata%\Frontier etc etc.. this is a hidden windows folder. But you can view these hidden folders and see the file for yourself just as I did.

Typically a 'Watchdog' - be it software process or hardware device (i.e. on a motherboard) is something that either polls something else or expects to be polled/poked within a certain interval. If that does not happen, it Barks!.
As a quick guess I suspect its either monitoring the main Elite process or expecting a packet from it, and if that doesn't happen it means somethings crashed. So bring up the error reporter!

Watchdog.exe IS used for crash reporting... it's the process that wraps up the logs for sending when it all goes horribly wrong...

I do think FD could make it more ginger in appearance and make it wink rather dodgily when it sends the debug info ;)

You are the weakest link... goodbye! ;) :D

So, watchdog.exe is for crash reporting. Today i tried to launch elite, but watchdog.exe crashes so game does not launch.

What am i supposed to do now? Crash reporter crashes so i cannot report a crash caused by a crash reporter.
