I wish there was a better way to tell if an animal can swim and use ponds/natural water to drink, it wasnt until my red panda nearly dehydrated that i realized that it couldnt go near the pond - tried to smooth it out and everything but it refused to go, so i guess it just cant swim and doesnt want to drink from it?

I think every Animal in the Game can drink from a natural Water Source. But there is a Bug at the Moment where Animals refuse to drink. I've already lost some Gorilla's, Bonobos, Wolves and Lemurs because of it.
You can save your Animals from death of dehydration trough sending them to Quarantine and after some Time back to the Enclosure (the most effective way).
You can also save them trough moving them to the Water-Source or transport them to a small Cage where they can do nothing else than drinking. (but these Methods don't help every time)
