It is not that simple. We don't know how long you have to "just play". Given the circumstance and the history of FDev, it is probably long, very long, probably frustratingly long, so you are more inclined to spend actual money.
The cash system on the consoles is skewed in favour of FDev. Because you can't buy an exact amount of ARX that you item of choice costs, you have to spend more money in the end.
But you can spend actual money now.
If the new system allows you to purchase just two skins over the course of a year by earning the credit in game, that is a positive outcome.

The console player has historically been tied to bundled 'currency' (remembering my own PS4 experience!) that doesn't seem to ever 'match' requirement exactly...
But the simple point, that a cosmetic can be free just by playing - regardless for how long - is actually free appears to be both missed and loathed by comments made.

With respect, as the ARX are yet to be made available, how can you assert that "you can't buy an exact amount of ARX that you item of choice costs" prior to the release date?

Cosmetics are just that, I buy those I want, but am not forced to do so, in the future I may even get some free, where is the loss there? Cosmetics are just that, and having them is the decision of the player, so why the dismay that getting something for nothing may take some time? They are vanity items, nothing more :)
This.

I have about 70 FPs left 'in the bank' after all my purchases of cosmetics over the years, which may be a dollar or two "wasted". Now that game play will cause this number to grow to an amount that will let me buy something like a cool nameplate, even this is not lost cash anymore.

The funny thing is that what people should really be complaining about is the high price of some of these cosmetics! There are many cosmetics I've passed by, not because they are bad, but rather because they just cost too much for what they are. At least now I can get some of these through gameplay.

My biggest concern with Arx is that it will incentivize lazy or unthinking behaviour in game. Powerplay for example has 5C and module shoppers, will Arx farming mess it up even more by people not caring? AFK bots will be swimming in Arx too.

Yes, but mostly for those who didn't intend to spend any money in the first place. Everyone else will probably pay more.

@Old Duck: Regarding the pricing, yes, the store is overpriced.

It is quite an assumption to say Arx will be farmed or farmable.

They specifically said:
"Arx can be earned by simply playing the game! We won't ask commanders to change how they play, simply being an active player and engaging with the game is all that's required."

All it may require is logging into the game twice per week. Or spending 2 hours online in the game weekly.
or taking the trip to Hutton

So you don’t want free things?
I understand your thinking that this is a marketing ploy that is supposed to grease the wheels and actually make more money for FD.
But the prices in the store are pretty reasonable, nobody’s going to end up in debt unless they bought everything.
I don’t see reason why FD shouldn’t be able to market their product.

Which is what we need to know. How much Arx can you get from earning merits? Since merits can be bought (and are free every 30 minutes) its open to abuse making proper Powerplay that much harder if people use it as a bureau de change.

Well, "engaging with the game" may also mean you only get rewards upon reaching certain pilot ranks and military titles. And then the only other source is CGs and event handouts.

I'd certainly like more clarity from FD on this, or at least highlight a potential issue. I don't want to get to September and find out FD have done the usual due consideration for PP (I.e. none) with new features.

I am fine with free stuff, if it is rewarded reasonably.

So, buying the whole game and its expansion is (even at full price) a lot cheaper than some ship colours. How is that reasonable?

There is a ship colour that costs nearly £40?

ETA: I could only find from £1.00 to £6.60 each...
