We have Notoriety - Why not fame?

Title says it all.
The C&P system in place makes you notorious if you go around murdering people.

Why not add the positive side of things?
Why not make you famous for helping people?

Fame would degrade at the same rate as notoriety, 1 point every 2 hours, and benefits could be a discount at stations for example, 2% per point of fame, for a 20% discount.
Or when arriving at a station, station announcer would actually announce your arrival to the system.
Mission board would give you better missions, or might even have a section for famous people only. Need Fame level 5 to access this section.
Better missions could have better rewards, better tasks or access to otherwise unobtainable things.

Then again, this version of a mission board could also be implemented at a pirate base, if we'd have anything like that.
 
As long as Fame is as ineffective as Notoriety.
The idea would be for fame to actually have an effect on the game.

Notoriety already has a negative effect on you - you cannot do anything on a station - restricted access.
If they'd had proper pirate bases, then you could land there only with Notoriety, but not with Fame.

It sounds good to investigate the possibility for PCs. I mean the PS4 and no doubt Xbox already have 'trophies" to complete that will boost our egos. However fame can feed our emotions and you know all these crazy ED players posting on the Forum...They get emotional about everything!

Note that consoles with 'trophies' do not get any credit improvements or better missions. Going in that direction will start an avalanche of posts on the Forum all about the worth of credits, effecting the BSG, interferes with Power Play and the balance Police are going to love this one! How is your popcorn and salt supply?

That could work and maybe a spiffy trophy decal (of course it will cost 1 ARX) for your ship. Then you lose it becoming a bad guy again. Things to consider. I might go with the more fame one has the less they get scanned at any new station they visit including Anarchy systems. Being allied with all factions in a system mostly does this now. Maybe less interdictions when delivering medical supplies etc as of course you are a good guy.

Then there is that problem of implementing this in an already complicated ED coding resulting in ten more bugs, eight will get fixed and two will be with us forever.

How do you check this helpfulness level? What triggers a point in helpfullness?

Notoriety works because the trigger is very simple specific and measurable. Killing a clean ship.

What's the equivalent here? Giving someone a compliment?

We do have individual faction reputations, so that kind of measures - doing good stuff for one faction makes them like you more.

Maybe it's just an indicator about how it's hard to make a few people happy but easy to make everyone angry.
 
You know how after you've been hanging around a system for a while you start getting missions offered over the coms. What if those only appear if your are famous (or infamous) with better payouts than equivalent missions offered at stations. Because you're so great at what you do, they'll pay a premium to get your special touch.
 

This is along the lines of what I think should happen, but I think fame shouldn't be completely positive.

Interesting idea. If notoriety attaches to bounties, I think "honor" would be the flipside for those who help others.

At the risk of spamming, I think assassination contracts of accomplished players at pirate dens would add additional PvP content. I mentioned it in the Bounty Hunting thread.

You repair a ship, you rescue people, you refuel others, you don't have any bounty on your head (bounty wipes fame instantly) - points triggered by completing scenarios.
Or you take people on long trips, ie long range passenger liner (points triggered by mission).

How do you record the "helping others" part.

What action specifically should the game track?

Seems like almost everyone would be super famous pretty quickly by just being a normal commander.

People get notoriety by destroying clean ships - which is a fairly small portion of the gameplay.
 
If there are penalties for notoriety then players will expect rewards for fame and I do not believe FDev would be willing to implement anything that might incite players to expect rewards.
