We need a BFG in Elite: Dangerous

It should be ridiculously hard to get; perhaps from a power with a 5 rating for 5 weeks. It should take two class 4 hardpoints, use a significant amount of power and generate heat over 200% as you charge it for for several seconds, and it should render all systems inoperable, including shields. When you fire the ricochet should push you back a few kilometers and when the charge activates it creates a point singularity that sucks in anything within a 2 km radius.

Yes because locking an impossibly overpowered weapon behind the wall of PowerPlay, a game element that many players have zero interest in, would be a wonderfully terrific way to ensure even more players give up on playing in Open and migrate to Solo.

So essentially retrofitting a capital ship main cannon to your ship. I don't like the idea of locking it behind PowerPlay but I like the rest of it. However, it would need some way of tracking the target and with thrusters offline that option is out. Plus, how would you stow it for SC and Hyperspace?

They had a "Kill everything bomb" in the old games but this was removed for good reason. People complained enough about the OP heat weapons let alone an insta-kill black hole gun...

You wouldn't need to track; 2km radius and you get knocked back while the singularity eats everything. It's a BFG after all.

It's an interesting idea, but I don't think it's likely to be implemented.

An overpowered weapon like would be fine against NPCs, but it wouldn't be fair to other cmdrs. The only way I could see something like that working in Elite is if there was a significant opportunity for others to fire at the weapon during charge-up, to trigger a premature detonation, which would engulf the ship with the BFG and destroy it. Also, I'd want to see a RNG for the kickback to be say 1-3 km, so that there's a fair chance that the ship would also be engulfed in the singularity.

Overall, I really don't see much of a chance of a weapon like that being added to Elite. It's too powerful. There are already complaints about the station's weapons being overpowered. There's not much fun to be had with a single-shot kill weapon, at least for the other players and there's no skill involved, unlike a railgun, which needs precise aiming.

And what happens if it is detonated near a station, which is inevitable? Does it destroy the station or just the nearby ships? If a lucky shot gets through the mailslot, do all the docked ships get engulfed? I just don't see this as a feasible option.

Bloody Fine Girl? Blue Fidgeting Gnat?

Wish people would explain their initialism's, especially when it's a thread title...

Everyone knows what BFG stands for, but profanity is not allowed in this forum. It's a weapon in the original Doom game.

[updated] Looks like someone beat me to it. Rep++, for the link.

Only if 8086 and cga are classed as things only young gamers would understand. But never did play doom...

Clearly not everyone, my first guess was pretty good though, it seems...

Original Elite had an "energy bomb". Expensive, but effective as a single-use weapon of last resort. It blew up everything except you, 100% guaranteed.

Fortunately, having an "iWin bomb" or "iWin gun" in a multiplayer game just isn't going to happen.
