“We Want New SRVs” - But Do We?

Given we have 1, 2, and 4 bay SRV modules I believe it is a fair assertion that additional SRV variants are a natural expectation.

I believe that FD even indicated at some point that additional SRV variants were on the road map even if they have not explicitly declared a delivery schedule/plan for them.

As with the SLFs, the most straightforward and obvious way to provide SRV variety would be via additional pre-canned variants rather than direct customisation.

As for what variants would be a natural expectation:-
  1. Scarab - Current Multi-role SRV
  2. Spider - Racing/Scouting/Exploration SRV (less cargo, faster and better jumping capacity, perhaps weaker weapons/shields/hull)
  3. Scorpion - Heavy Assault SRV (less cargo, better shields/armour and perhaps better weapons, perhaps slower/heavier)
  4. Ant - Salvage/SAR/Mining SRV (more cargo space, perhaps slower/heavier, perhaps weaker weapons/shields/hull)

Even if Scarab was configurable, we need at least one or two different designs just for variety. Something with tracks and perhaps a hovering one. My list remains:
  • Surface Combat Vehicle - More weapons, for example maybe a laser and a few missiles, no cargo space.
  • Surface Transport Vehicle - 6 tons of cargo, only a small mining laser that can break rocks at close range.
  • Surface Hover Vehicle - SRV version of the skimmer. Perhaps a Human version runs out of fuel real quick, but there's a grindable Guardian hybrid that doesn't.

I mean I want a light attack vehicle and a heavy one as well as a truck of some kind for planetary salvage and missions for those srvs. If this is done through customization or new srv types is of no consequence for me.

I'd also like to see multi crew with the lav and hav.

Absolutely agree. One that can haul a few more tons of cargo would be a big help. Even if the bay for that one needed the same size as the SLF hanger.

Yeah I wouldn't mind if it was restricted to big ships either. The heavy attack vehicle and the truck like srv.

I agree with the OP... but I remember FD saying there would be more than one type of SRV. I would just like to see that, whatever that might be

Skimmer SRV. I avoid anything SRV related as I do not play a spaceship game to drive buggies. I have no interest in driving games, or driving in games in general, and never will.

I do see your point of view, and also would not mind there being a Skimmer/Hovercraft type SRV... BUT... SRVs are fully in keeping with the space exploration aspect of ED.

Lunar Rover with the Apollo missions anyone?

Nothing in "Surface Reconnaissance Vehicle" denotes wheeled/tracked. I'm not against SRVs and didn't say anything to the tune of "remove ground based vehicles nao!", I just don't enjoy driving ground vehicles and I am far from the first person to ask for Skimmer SRVs.

Perhaps you should edit the OP to clarify the opinions on SRV options you will permit to be expressed without browbeatings?

I have no issue with wheeled/tracked SRVs like the Scarab in the game, I hope they add more. I am only saying that I personally do not enjoy them and would like a Skimmer option. Were a Skimmer option available, myself and many others would go planet side outside of when absolutely required. The handful of people I play ED with all avoid surface activity like the plague. Shame really. But you can't expect players who signed up for one type of gameplay to enjoy another. Thinking people who want to fly spaceships will certainly enjoy driving buggies as well isn't any more realistic than expecting someone who enjoys FPS games to also love side-scrolling shooters.

I am not saying any particular individual "should" enjoy them but have you actually given them a fair go? SRVs are not entirely about driving as such - there is more to operating them than that.

That being said, I would fully expect any hovering type SRV to eat fuel faster than an American gas-guzzling muscle car and possibly worse fuel consumption than at least some modern Main Battle Tanks. Further more, I would fully expect any hovering type SRV to either have increased fuel consumption in high-G environments or have an upper limit to the number of G's in which they can operate.

I'm all for several types of SRV's, but 1st we need more challenging planetary landings, not just higher or lower gravity, - Rockfalls while climbing or Sandpits to get stuck in - Having to find a way around a lava flow, Avoid a volcano - Pick your way through a maze of giant boulders to get to a deposit of Gold, Copper or Iron to mine - many possibilities.

I am quite competent with the SRV due to the Guardian Grind and occasional Raw Mats field trip, in which I fill everything up completely to put off having to get into the SRV again for as long as possible. My goal is always to get out of the SRV as fast as possible, so I've gotten pretty good at using them. And I would gladly halve my SRV's fuel tank if it could Skim, the synth mats would be worth it for me.

More planetside fun would be cool, but the last thing we need is even more stuff for the SRV to get stuck on, ha.

I had to jump over a gap between 2 buildings in order to get to my target and got stuck (wedged) between them - couldnt get out had to call a friend to come to bump me out from below with his thrusters in his SRV. ;>)
