Newcomer / Intro Weapon loadout question

Hey there.

Just got a noob question. Which weapons are the best? Or (not to sound like a complete noob) I´d like to know which weapons are most combat effective at the moment. i experimented with various types of weapons, burst cannons and rail guns (both of which i sold almost immediately), tried rockets but i thought they were expensive with limited ammo and what i stuck with for now is standart Gimballed Cannon + two gimballed burst lasers.

Flying an eagle FTR, and intend to go to cobra next.

Thanks for your input.

A lot is down to personal preference. Me? I like gimbled multi-cannons, followed closely by gimbled burst lasers. Others will have their own preferences.

As a fact, fixed weapons are more powerful than the equivalent gimbaled weapons and have the added advantage that chaff does not affect the aim. The downside is that you have to point your ship pretty accurately. if, like me, you can't hit the side of a barn door at ten paces, gimbaled is unfortunately the way to go.

Missiles are really for defence and you have to really be big to afford them.

I use a gimballed burst laser on my Eagle's top mount and fixed pulse lasers on the bottom two. A gimballed weapon on the top mount makes it easy to carry on hitting them whilst they're trying to out-turn you, so once you straighten up the fixed weapons can come into play. This way you can keep their shields at a minimum :)

I didnt mean missiles.. Just had a unguided rocket launcher on the roof and i was actually rather acurate with it, but thats probably just because i used it more or less as a shotgun ("hey mr python, how ya doin? lemme just land on you nose first and introduce you to my 8 little rocket friends").

but the railgun was a disaster(was fixed). 200CR per shot and i hit maybe 1/5 cause of the delay before it starts shooting.

Btw why are the gimbled variants weaker? Also how much weaker? Is it a big difference or a small one?

Ah cool. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Why are the gimbaled variants weaker? They just are. They deliver less punch. You can use the compare feature in outfitting to see the amount of damage they do next to the equipped weapons.

Their other inherent weakness is the ability for the tracking to be put off by counter measures. Better sensors help mitigate that but not completely. Some people swear they are enough to turn the fight.
