weapons meta, always multi-cannons?

It seems like lasers + multi-cannons is the dominant loadout for most builds. Are any other weapons viable?

Cannons: too slow

Frag Cannon: range too short

mine launcher: maybe only good for running away?

rail-gun: ammo too expensive

plasma accelerator: fires too slow

dumbfire missiles: only good against large ships

seeking missiles: too easy to defeat

torpedoes: not worth the slot for one shot.

The lave ambush PvPers seem to prefer the massive missile alpha strike loadout...

Never understood why they can't make different load-outs more viable;

For one; I can hold 300+ ammunition for other types of weapons but a rail-gun only has 100 shots?

Shouldn't the rail gun be a small projectile launched at incredible speed? I should therefore be able to hold more ammunition on my ship than say a multi cannon.

There was a post a week or so ago asking for storage bays for ammunition , this would make it more interesting and other weapons could potentially become more viable. When you farm Conflict zones its just not worth taking these low ammo type weapons as it just takes too long to fly back to station and reload. Its a choice I make I guess to increase efficiency and make more coin.

In my python I carry 1xRailgun or 1xPlasma accelerator just for fun of it (S&Giggles) but after 25 kills with the rail gun it is basically dead weight.

Hopefully they keep changing it slightly to get a good balance. But PVP makes it hard to balance, try giving someone endless missile load-out and watch the spam, it would just be too powerful.

Plasma slug solves all problems, Corzan. Though you may need a bigger fuel tank for RES farming. ;)

Anyway, OP, when I was doing PvP, I quite liked the Gunship with frag cannons. She always reminded me of that angry midget with a shotgun from borderlands - Nobody takes you seriously, then they let you get close and BOOOM! 1100MJ damage. It's awesome.
Naturally you also have simple gankers who just equip torps or missiles, because they don't need to fight - Just unload and if the target didn't die, run.

But for serious fighting you need to keep four pips in SYS, most of the time, so you have two pips to manage the rest. The two weapons that stay most effective in that situation are pulse lasers and multicannons. So that's why they are so widely used. *shruggs*

That's one of the "things" Elite has going for it. The weapons are not balanced. Although PvP is in the game, the game isn't designed for it. So weapons differ in strength, effectivity and fun factor quite a lot. Which is awesome for PvE. And that's much more important than PvPers having wider variety of meta options, imho.

Canon with the good mod and special effect might be very effective for agile ships vs big ones , but otherwise energy weapons + multi seems the best "every kind of purpose" loadout ; in fact with this build you're never wrong. Would be nice to introduce some efficient variations. As said before , the changes in other weapons are a start but need to go further.

Long range cannons can have projectile speeds faster than multicannon and have some very nice effects available. Plasmas? Those are awesome! Frags? Close in they can be devastating. Nah, plenty there besides the multicannon.

I love plasma cannons. They're not efficient, and they're very hard to use against small ships... but when they hit... they're marvelous.

I really hope FD would add some kind of different graphical effect to them, when they hit. It's just underwhelming right now compared to the effect caused in the shields/hull of the target. Multicannons are way more spectacular.

Woah, major necro.

Since weapons have undergone quite a few changes since OP posted, then OPs points are very out of date.

Feel free to start a new thread to discuss the current situation regarding weapons.
