Webcam turns on when playing Elite: Dangerous?

Just got gamma access and think the game so far is great - but I noticed my webcam turns on when I'm playing, i.e. the light goes on indicating it's in use. What's the deal with that? Why would a game like this even need access to my webcam?

Anyone else noticed this?

Anyone know -why- the webcam gets turned on?? Closing the game also stops the webcam, so it's definitely something related to the game...

I'm guessing it is recognizes the mic on the webcam (voice comms).

If it isn't the Microphone with the camera triggering it then I would get your PC scanned asap. I haven't had any problem with my webcam (or mic) for that matter.

Yup - thought that might be it but I also have a headset and use that for audio in/out.

But I've just had a look at the Recording tab on the Sound dialog (in Windows) and saw that my headset was the default communications device but my webcam was the default recording device. Changing the default device to the headset solved the problem!

Thanks for the input - hope it helps someone else now...

ps I guess the Federation will have to find another way to spy on me ;)

Had the same issue myself a motherboard upgrade. Suddenly i looked up and there was Hal looking at me with his unblinking eye. Was a little off putting for sure. I don't know why I didn't think of checking what device was set as default recording device and is now fixed :D
