Do the turrets shoot "red" targets or actually hostile targets that have hit you?

If "shoot at red", a ship shoots at you but doesn't hit, and turrets shoot back -> Wanted (big problem)
If "shoot only at hostile", a ship shoots at you, becomes red, doesn't hit, turrets don't shoot back -> OK

Which is it?

I was asking if I get a bounty when I RETURN fire BEFORE the scan shows him as wanted. I should be allowed to safely defend myself, no matter what the scanner shows

That should be the case (i.e. if it's not, it's a bug and you should ticket it), if you have "report crimes against me" switched on. If you have that switched on, the attacker should become wanted as soon as (s)he hits you.

If that is switched off, the attacker will not become wanted when (s)he hits you, as that crime will not have been reported. So returning fire under these conditions will be a crime and will land you with a bounty. This is correct behaviour, so before creating a ticket, check this setting under "Functions" on your right-hand panel.

You shouldn't do - you can shoot back legally once you've been hit by weapons fire from another ship. If your turrets fired first then you would be in the wrong.

Michael

Ok thanks for clarifying. So it appears to be a bug which I will ticket then.

I was asking because there are at least 2 different types of "getting hit".
First one is by accident, when the NPC is behind me and shoots at a target in front of me and accidentally hits me. In that case the attacker doesn't get a wanted status and does not turn red on the radar. And since I am more forgiving than the local police forces I will not go beserk on the attacker.
Second one is when there is a pirate approaching behind my mining vessel and asking something like "what do you carry, i wonder?" and then opens fire because my cargo-hold is full of ore. In that case my turrets immediately shoot back and it happened more than one time that I got a wanted status because of that.

I think most readers have understood quite well. It just happens that you're still annoyed with the explanation that current game rules don't allow you to shoot at a ship that you haven't scanned & identified as hostile. Just imagine it as a court-certified way to log and thereby prove you were legally allowed to shoot back.

That leaves you only one option - open a ticket and ask for a change of rules. It would be easy to log the shot that hit you and automatically assign the wanted status to the pilot, making immediate retaliation possible. But that would still be a rule change.
Maybe you right, but most of the answers were about other aspects of that game mechanic, so yea, i got a little bit annoyed after the 5th attempt to explain what I was on about.
It's just so hard to express my thoughts in this weird language :p

I don't believe that is a rule change; that is (as I understand it) exactly what is supposed to happen, but only if "report crimes against me" is switched on. I may have missed it, but I haven't seen the OP confirm that he has that setting switched on. If he does, then it is a bug that should be ticketed; if not, the game is performing as designed.

I can't stress that last part enough: if you are not reporting crimes against you then retaliating to defend yourself against a pilot who was clean before shooting you is a crime. You do not have the right to defend yourself if you have not reported the attacker.

I am not sure you guys actually understand what my post was about. It was only(!) about the fact that I am not legally allowed to shoot at someone who is already shooting at me (its called RETURNING FIRE!). If I happen to return fire at the attacker without waiting for the scan result, I will get a bounty on my head (and yes, I know it depends on the system whether I get a bounty or not... for crying out loud!).... come on, it's really not that hard to understand.

It has never been a problem for me ... sometimes I just know that my cargo is full and the npc whom turn up to scan my ship most likely open fire to rob you. So I usually wait until first bullet hit my shield and when that happens I can immediately return fire without first scanning them. The trick here is that their rounds must hit your shield. If they misses when they open fire it don't count. So if the npc aren't registered as wanted right after the first round hit you, it's a bug.

Why is this an option i.e. why would I turn off reporting crimes against me?

It's really handy when you don't want the Feds dropping in....

For example, if you go out interdicting, and then the victim (criminal!) drops his haul of Pavonis Ear Grubs..... it's nice to be able to scoop them up safely knowing that the Feds won't be hurrying to check out the crimescene!

I usually have the option turned off when in a tougher ship like the Asp, and turn it back on when in a relatively defenceless craft like the Lakon-6

Usefull when playing in a group - you'll end up with some friendly fire and this way your friends don't become hostile to you just because you happened to fly through their firing arc.

Thanks to all above.

Never interdicted, scooped cargo, played in a group or carried illegal stuff, so never occured to me.

This is why I won't be bored of this game for a very, very long time. I thought by now I'd have moved on to a new trade, but I'm still having an absolute ball basic Bounty Hunting.
The rate I'm going they'll be adding more content faster than I can consume it :)
