Newcomer / Intro Welcome to Jameson Memorial noobie - "Now die"

Hi - This is my first post and I just want to voice my concern and disappointment about the proud moment I finally unlocked Shinrarta Dezhra. This took me months to finally achieve, so was somewhat excited to be making my way to Jameson Memorial, only to Jump in and immediately be attacked and destroyed within minutes by some "Heroic" commander who wanted to welcome me. I was not carrying anything in my hold, so there was no financial gain for them. This has put me off playing in 'Open Play', which i'm gutted about. Is there no control in 'Open Play' to discourage this type of behaviour? Seems a shame that elitist players with engineered ships and a wealth of experience take it upon themselves to decide who is worthy to join the community.....I could understand if I was carrying cargo - we all need to make a living! Has anyone else had this experience...and if so, what would you advise?

It has nothing to do with "elitist players" - they are just seal-clubbing gankers. ShinDez is notorious for them - shame you had not found these forums before as you would have been forewarned.

Join a PG if you want to avoid bored kiddies looking for LULZ - elitepve.com is the most populated set of groups.

Hope it doesn't put you off too much.

Put it down to experience.

If you are in a paper ship, fly the last jump in solo or pg. Otherwise build your ship to have some defense and learn how to Brave Sir Robin - plenty of threads on here with advice or tap up G.A.R.D or some other group for training.

One thing for sure - it 'aint going to change. Been there got the t'shirt etc. Best way to deal with it is to build a cheap ship and engage with ganker pilots in open in shidez for kicks - suprisingly fun, and most of them are human beings underneath in the end. Also they're not as impregnable as you might think (though my Suicidey wasnt man enough to drop their shields - still fun though)

If you've not had any experience of being ganked before, then I would suggest flying to Jameson in PG or Solo. If you want to avoid them then my other tip would be to try gravity braking to approach the station.

The first step in gravity braking is to not approach the target on the horizontal plane (because it makes it easier to spot the station's position. So aim about 45 degrees above or below the orbital plane for at least 50Ls, then aim more towards the station.
This has the added bonus that you are already not in a straight line for most people trying to interdict you, so they have to manoeuvre to try to get behind you, you should be able to see this happening and can then take appropriate action to stop them getting a line on you. Then there's the approach to the station itself, because you are coming in from an unusual angle it also throws off most people who lie in wait. Here's a few examples of how to approach a station the Buckyball way, it might help ;) Plus it's just a better way to approach stations in everything but a large ship :D

Feel fo you, it's not nice. as @Ozric said, watch the videos and consider PG or Solo.

Everyone expects the friendly aura of DS9, welcome to Mos Eisley. On the bright side, you now know what to expect at certain notorious locations across the bubble...

Jameson Memorial
Deciat & some other engineer bases
CGs

So, prepare your ship & tactics, join a PG/solo, or simply avoid.

Thanks Ozric - I'll watch the videos and see if I can learn gravity braking (y)

get used to PVP. It is fun. I usually start recording when arriving at typical gank-places. Try to survive. Last week I did a short trip outside Jaques with a Chieftain that I want to use to pvp. It is nowhere near ready to do that but anyway. There were two Mambas flying around. We "sniffed" each other and then the fun started. I tried to outrun them by flying near the station. Bumped my ship myself while trying FA-off. Then there where emergency messages, module-specific things, whatever. After a few minutes I blew up.

While watching my recording I could notice all things that happened, all mistakes I made. And I made a lot. It really helps to simply do PVP for learning. Learn to "look" outside the ship, realize the situation. It is completely different to npc approaches.

While watching the video I noticed I had been shot by a second player. and so on. It is a matter of training.

I have deleveloped this "situational awareness" meanwhile. So I know that there is danger. And I can escape this situations. Next step: enter the situation on purpose. And learn from it.

edit: and I have those PVP-Enemies on my friendlist after that. I noticed, you get respect if you are not salty but eager to learn from them.

Shinrarta is one those "colourfull places" where nearly anything can happen. For the local denizens "friendly greeting" means at least one shot with whatever weapon is in available to newcomers. I have seen some pretty odd behauviour there while visiting in open. But one thing, anyone visiting there is in no way "noob", you need to have at least one Elite rating, and should know how things are in the Elite Universe.

Don't worry about faceplanting into a planet, it will happen a lot :D But even the loop and swoop approach is far faster then the conventional approach as you can see from the comparison video.
I'd recommend (not just because we're a great bunch) to pop in and say hi to the Buckyball Racing Club if you need any tips. We do have another race coming up soon, but it is an SRV based one. The race threads are great places to learn tips and tricks that will help you in all aspects of your flying.

This just gives me the satisfaction of being in solo, knowing that gankers can't touch me ner-ner-nee-ner-ner.

Of course, nothing can be done about my own stupity like faceplanting or accidentally firing on the police force or boosting out of a station inaccurately. Or switching off SCA for some reason, hit "jump" and immediately leave the cockpit to make a cuppa. Not even 15,000 SPF will save you there.
