Well, after playing in VR for a while...........

Oh, I'm sure that in 15 years the norm will have gone from families sitting around, watching TV together, to families all laying around with VR headsets on - completely blocked out from each other.

Marsha Newmark from Count Zero comes to mind :)

15 years from now it will be like the matrix. Just a plug in to the back of your brain and you will be literatlly transported to another digital world.

Yes, the underpantatry that is monitors, yet still people cling to them like a child clings to a security blanket. Playing any kind of three dimensional game/sim on monitors just hurts my eyes and brain now, so never ever going back.

It's funny. When you first fire it up in VR, the resolution hit is really noticeable. I was almost turned off by it. But shortly after you start, the beauty of scale and distance and volume, not to mention the eye-tracking, really sinks in. 2D seems to just cease to be an option.

I too miss my second monitor for watching other things while I play... but frankly, sitting in my spaceships in VR is so immersive that I don't even need it.

+1

On the other hand.... firing it up in full Ultra in 2D, so I can do other things while I fly... I forgot how visually stunning this game is on those settings.

Definitely a place for both modes!

Is AI a "game" or just an experience where you don't really do anything but experience it?

Alien: Isolation is a survival horror AAA game. And it got its secret VR mode reactivated by modder Nibre: https://github.com/Nibre/MotherVR/releases with vive support coming soon(tm). Too bad SEGA didn't do it, I would gladly pay for a DLC with native VR support. Guess my monies are going to the modder if he manages to get it working on the Vive.

ARK: Survival Evolved also has rudimentary VR support. It would be awesome to see it refined, but at the moment its very slow (way more polys than other UnrealEngined games in VR like Robo Recall etc). ARK isn't too bad in 2D - I have got used to it - to the point where when I drop into ED or Robo Recall etc, it feels all new again and mind-blowing!

Lone Echo is brilliant too. Best VR title so far and an awesome pointer to FD for 'space-legs' motion implementation.

I find, that while VR is fantastic, I do switch back to 2D to play certain parts of game.
If I want to quickly grind a load of missions, 2D is better, but for just simple flying about without needing all the controls, VR is hard to beat.

On my third week playing ED in VR. My favorite part is exploring planets in the SRV. The connection between ground and vehicle is quite engaging. I disable the panels on either side and call them up with my voicepack when I need them. Like it's been said, the Thargoid ship, scan missions and planetary exploration become memories.

Love my VR but, after wearing for a couple hours really gets heavy on my face. I'm constantly having to remove it to scratch or rub and itchy spot or readjust due to visual sagging. I'm going to look for a padded seal, maybe that'll help.

All my controls are on the HOTAS. I can switch to 2d but why would I? Note that I don't play in Netflix mode :) And if I need eddb.io or spansh I either alt tab or use my mobile phone which I can glance on through vive nose gap.

One of these https://widmovr.com/product/oculus-rift-cover/ can be a god send.
I have the vr cover kit https://vrcover.com/product/oculus-rift-facial-interface-foam-replacement-basic-set/ but I end up preferring the default rim with the included soft cover.

So don't need more than just that little piece of cloth.

While I still love playing in VR with my pimax, I just got a 34" curved widescreen monitor from massdrop. Elite looks pretty amazing on that at 100hz. I think I'll be splitting my time 50/50 with this combination.

Add me to the list of players who will be splitting their time between VR and 2D play.

I do my trading and SRV work on a 34" curved ultra wide monitor at 100hz. Smooth, sharp image with amazing detail.

I have an Eagle for VR touring. The sense of immersion one gets staring out from under that big canopy into the enormity of space is amazing.

And I'll probably continue to split my time between the two modes as each currently has distinct advantages and disadvantages. The Oculus gives incredible immersion at the cost of high resolution and fine details with a potential for motion sickness. The curved ultra wide monitor give a crisp, sharp images and ability to take notes and do things concurrently outside the game, but with much less immersion.
