Trying to laugh but this sense of fear and dread for the future is just to much.

I have always been a fan of the empire though. I was in the area not too long ago, and visited the emperor's tower.
Must say, was impressed. Didn't get to travel in a Cutter back home, had to make do with a Clipper, but I did enjoy watching The Apprentice UA'S and Barnacles when it was on.
I do think the emperor is the right person to defeat the thargoids. Thargoids have been coming under the radar far too much, and since the attack on the binary stars, both the federation and the empire need to band together to defeat the Thargoids once and for all. The bubble will be a much better place after that, and a strong leader that isn't afraid of OP combat loggers is what is needed.
