Well, that just happened.....

What did happen though, was when I got back, I loaded up on cargo missions to the next system over, and went on a proper test run. Next thing I know, I'm interdicted by a pirate, and had to throttle down in the hopes my shields would hold while I ran away. I have a 5A shield with 4 boosters. Not only was I mass locked, but, despite having multi cannons, the NPC stripped my shields before I could even swear, and blew my up, leaving me with with a rebuy+fines which I begrudgingly paid off.

let me try to understand this expectation.
i'm currently flying a T9 with engineered 6C Bi-Waves, and 3 engineered booster.

i have 214!!! Shield hitpoints with roughly 50% resists against all.
those shields i have there are usually lose one ring from just touching the letterbox slightly on my way out without any pips in sys.

how can you expect to tank an interdicting pirate from having an even worse shield equipped?
please look at your ships numbers before undocking. currently the type9 has a hull more then twice as heavy as a conda, and half the utility slots for boosters

even after the patch, when the base mass is reduced (which is what counts for shield strength) i would never go lower then Class6 shields.

oh... and just for the record. i submit to any interdicton up to a deadly FDL's to collect the bounties -> because my class5 internal bay is reserved for my Elite Imperial Figther with Plasma weapons.
the fighter distracts any attacking pirate, and deals significant damage, while i keep shooting my long range lasers, corrosive multicannon and drag seekers at the fool.

with that beeing said - fly save!

Ignore the interdiction part, was putting on the Oculus and starting the recording.

Basic example, the ship has no enginerring except for FSD, the ship was in storage so some modules are Stock E, I also stole a few weapons from storage for demonstration purposes. 400+ tonnes of cargo onboard.

Now there is no reason to fight in any freighter, unless you want some extra cash.

Fair enough it is only a master Vulture, but it is the same deal with any NPC. Keep boosting towards them, then jump out, or keep boosting towards them, and pummel them to death. Once under fire, npc's become predicatble.

Now if it was a human, they would know they are in the superior ship, they wouldn't evade, just take me out as quick as possible. Even an Elite NPC Anaconda will try to evade a missile/torp attack, I posted a video nearrly two years ago, standard freighter build T9 fighting two Anaconda's. Whilst it looked very cinematic, I wasnt doing anything special or anything that required that much skill.

I wouldn't suggest trying to pummel another cmdr, will end badly, although I did pummel an Elite greifer in Deciet, but I have a feeling he probably fast tracked his way to Elite, so you never know, my advice for open is get away asap.

I can kind of relate. I also ditched my first T-9 after a few frustrated runs. That said, stock 5A shields with 4 unengineered boosters probably isn't going to cut it. I would for now, instead go for the T-10 with engr'd 8A or 8C-biweave shields with most utility slots filled with resistance engr'd boosters, and a fighter can also help run interference whether for a T-9 or T-10. The T-9 is supposed to get another module compartment when Beyond, chapter 1 arrives, so maybe it'll fare better with room to spare after a big shield generator..
