We're flying around in Glass-less cockpits?

It finally occurred to me that our cockpit models have no glass rendered at all in first person (other than Special FX) and my ocd kicked in realizing we're flying around glass-less meshes. After watching star-field videos you can clearly see they render a glass effect over the cockpit that emphasizes some dirt/noise around the bar areas while leaving the core views mostly clean for viewing but elite just has empty space between ship frame meshes and glass areas.

Does this bother anyone else that no glass effect is ever rendered other than in 3rd person? Because in reality our cockpit meshes have no glass at all and we're just flying around exposed to space lol.

Pre Horizons, extremely detailed canopy textures (especially noticeable in VR) Sometime after Horizons launch, massive texture downgrade. Odyssey launch, textures are gone.

I would actually pay to get those textures back, anyone else with a low-end rig (many others also didn't want glass textures) can carry on with the textureless canopy.

The game looked a lot better in many ways shortly after it launched, they downgraded features as they added other new features, presumably for optimization.

Hey, planets are missing from supercruise in the live space game. Please wait your turn :)

I've seen the videos and screenshots from the early days of Elite (before my time), and it was crazy-detailed in an amazing way. I'll never understand why developers remove this detail completely rather than just moving it to the Ultra settings. Let the players decide what they want to see, that's why PC has graphics settings to begin with!

Exactly mate. When I sat in the Cockpit of my Cobra in VR after the downgrade, I thought the texture downgrade was a bug, it looked awful, took me a while to adjust to it. Just let us tick a box in the options, we all have different rigs. A lot of cool features went missing over the years. The Sound also got downgraded at some point for optimization (sound design has always been amazing)

Yeah look at some of OA's early video's from the beta or alpha or whatever it was. Undeniably there was a downgrade in graphics for the xbox version. I still resent getting told via community management there wasn't.

but I am not going to update that just to compare.

I was going to tease, but that's actually a really smart coping mechanism. Rat catcher maintains the graphics in legacy is broken after using the odd graphics settings on it...

The exact opposite is me.. i have both clients with ships in the exact same system and do the same activity on both clients immediately after each other and compare all the details. Its not worth the hassle, and you end up in legacy.

They were flagged as causing fps drops ages ago.
Thanks for the info. I think it should be revisited and some basic light dirt/impression of glass at the frame edges blending off into transparency like you see here in Starfield would do wonders for immersion (notice the edges in the dark areas around frames.). I looks a bit strange to see nothing reflections or dirt at all other than looking at direct up close light sources.

Didn't they remove those textures some time ago? I think I've read something regarding the removal of those textures in one of the updates. In the past, they had beautiful textures with scratches etc.

Yep, there had been a big debate about the removal and the reworked canopy textures.
They changed it with the next update again to the current state.

Hm...when you've done a pretty good deal of supercruising around, the cockpit glass is very obvious. And dirty. And scratched as if by a wildcat pack. Are you talking about something different?
