What activities will get you banned in this game?

I am pretty keen to read or hear an accurate description of what kind of activities will get your account banned in this game. I keep hearing words like 'griefing' and 'exploiting' and after a few weeks playing the game, am yet to see instances of either. Nor would I cry like a baby if I did. However, it appears some people's description of 'griefing' is being shot down. Sorry, thats not enough info for me;. The game has guns. The game has enemy factions. The game has idiots. Shooters gunna shoot. That can't be griefing, surely.

I'm not saying it doesn't exist (I'm sure it does) but I do not know if an accurate explanation of what qualifies it is. And I'd like to know, because I am going to shoot some people/factions on sight, no questions asked. If thats actually illegal, then, well, its not explained in any info I have seen when I bought the game. I didn't but this game to play Elite: hand-holding. Pretty sure I paid for a game called Elite dangerous, and I want to be attacked, griefed even (whatever you quantify that as) and actually want this to feel dangerous. Way more fun that carting cargo back and forth

So, what is actually flat out not allowed, and where is this written as lore? I really want to know before I start tearing my enemies sheet up, which I'm about to start doing.

Asking questions in the flavor of "What will get me banned" is a great start. Just kidding. In all seriousness though I'm not sure they've defined it that well. I'm guessing it's on a case by case basis. Game exploiting might be up there close to the top though.

Exactly what Whiterose said. FD have produced a shooting game in an open galaxy. If an individual can go in and make everyone's life a misery, they've still paid their money for the privilege. It's up to FD to create an ethic or mechanic within the game which prevents this, e.g. persistent bounties, a "fugitive" class and/or a Most Wanted system for the bounty hunters to mop them up. In effect, the game should be able to look after itself. For every ten pirates there should be one white knight. Pass me my sniper rifle and cloaking device...

You can do everything you want to and what game mechanics allow. However those game mechanics might punish you. If you find an exploit and it gets discovered FD will take the credits gained trough the exploit from your account.

Someone mentioned for example being killed outside a station (a bit out from the cops circling) and then spawn in that station, come out and get killed again by the same player - rinse repeat. Although not "illegal" i would call it being a jerk and a griefer. But there is no restrictions on this so knock yourself out if thats what make you happy. This is a mechanic issue rather than a player one. People will do what they want to do.

Generally in online games you won't get banned for anything that won't cost the company managing it money or time dealing with complaints. For example using an exploit to trick the servers into giving you free ships or gear or an unfair advantage, that'd get you banned. Anything you do in the confines of the game mechanics (except exploiting bugs to do the former) is totally fair game though. Shoot to your heart's content. Hunt one guy for his entire playing career if you want to be a and get away with it.

Thanks for the responses guys. I ask because I've read a lot of comments in this forum that have struck me as really odd, and it's made me wonder if the way I plan to play this game is against the spirit of it. I have never played an MMO before (have avoided them deliberately) but I have been heavily involved with PC games for a long time, and the games that I've always played have embraced the idea of conflict and shooting at other players. Comments I have read around here have made me feel as if many ED players take a dim view of it and I've been wondering what is acceptable then.

I've played quite a few space combat sims, from the X-Wing/Tie series and Starlancer (which I really loved). They were all about the combat. Thats part of what I was hoping to get out of this game. Thats not to say I have or plan to shoot at anyone willy-nilly - I don't. I won't shoot at a CMDR unless they are wanted, or are aligned with the feds. I'm considered hostile with the feds, and NPCs swarm me on sight, and I'm embracing that and it has become the most enjoyable part of the game to me. I was just curious if players would start reporting me (and whether their whims would have merit) if I gunned for them. I figure the game provides guns (and plenty of them) and mechanics that make for affiliations and enemies, which is why I was confused about all the commentary around here from people going on about 'griefers' and complaining about being shot down. I'm feeling less confused now, so thanks

Since they nixed the offline mode which was a major selling feature for a lot of people i don't think they would ban anyone. Not allowing somebody to play a game they sold as offline and made online only would be a horrible thing to do.

No idea... if you're doing something and you find yourself wondering "I wonder if this will get me banned" then you probably shouldn't be doing it.

Right now only editing the game code can get you banned.

Exploiting gets you wiped fully/partially, but this can change.

Griefing, stealing, killing, calling out names, etc. are all fair in this game, actually it's features you're meant to do against NPCs and players alike.

While the code of conduct is hidden over on the store of all places it is not that hard to find, all games have them.

No idea... if you're doing something and you find yourself wondering "I wonder if this will get me banned" then you probably shouldn't be doing it.

Yeah, I've never done anything I've thought was morally wrong, nor would I, but going by the sheer amount of whining about others play styles here I started to wonder

Ok, i am absolutely not accusing you of anything, but juuuust the way your question is asked it reads to me like you already had some shady way in mind on how to break the rules or found a loophole/exploit that you are planning to use and want to make sure that your first shot at doing so wont get you banned. A bit suspicious, really.

Let me give you an example of what i think CAN get you banned: There is this guy that somehow found a way to shoot people inside of a space station without getting shot at. He did so repeatedly. I am pretty sure when they catch him he will be at least warned, if not outright banned.

Can you give us your CMDR OP and your location and I am sure the Bounty Hunters amongst us will happily keep you on the straight and narrow.
