What Aliens should populate this Galaxy?

Any such aliens will have to be simple enough, or clever enough, to hide from the Thargoids.

Perhaps something like the Yilane of Harry Harrison's West of Eden series, or the Yuuzahn Vong from the now-retconned Star Wars sequel novels - critters who use an entirely biotechnological-derived civilization, which would evade the sensors of the Thargoids who are looking for technological signs that a new sentient species has arisen.

The other alternative is a "First Ones" solution, an advanced race who had fought the Thargoids to a standstill in the remote past, but gave up interstellar colonization in the face of repeated Thargoid attacks and retreated back to their homeworld, maintaining the capability of defending their home from the Thargoids - and anyone else. The Thargoids would probably be tolerant of such races continued existence, so long as they never again ventured forth from their fortress system.

Pewpew and more pew is great. But some of us just like potatoes, steamed veggies, and a quality beer, to go along with our steak, others are vegetarian.
Give us some story based missions to go along with the pewpew, or way that doesn't require it all for those that don't like steak, please.
Oh I know. It's one of the things I love about this game. It's just mind blowing, after all my years of gaming, that there are people that enjoy gaming without wanting combat. I love it though and wouldn't haven't any other way.

Well; energy beings are pretty popular in SF, so it's hard to say.
Heinlein's Martians (Stranger in a Strange Land) were seriously borderline, Niven had them in his 'known Space' though I can't recall the name ATM. Japanese anime is positively FILLED with energy beings and since I'm a fan of the cheap 70's Daw pulp SF, you have Species X, the Outsiders, the Outlanders, The Exalted...that's about all I can remember at the moment, and I sure can't put authors to those bloody silly (but fun) titles. ;)
James Blish had some that lived in stars in the books The Star Dwellers and Mission to the Heart Stars, they were the ones I was thinking of.

No Ewoks or Gungans pls...

Meesa find your lack of faith...disturbing. ;)

Antropomorphic cats, sapient crystals that communicate by shooting lasers at each other (and players too), ponies, a whole bunch of human-looking aliens that have different kinds of forehead ridges, wise old space whales, runaway Von Neumann machines from an extinct civilization for pew-pews.

I like the ones we currently have. Guardians, Thargoids and the cloud life forms. They're only lacking because they were not completed yet abandoned after the introduction.

What about more of the same instead of new ones?

Though +1 for blue skinned women.

AI clanking replicators / Von Neumann probes would be a great addition, yeah! I've thought so for a long time.

I know some will think it's too No Man's Sky, but it would be one relatively simple way to introduce more menace and intrigue in the black.

They shouldn't be frequently encountered, they should be rare enough that it's an event when you detect one and you feel compelled to investigate, but not restricted to tiny areas of the galaxy like NSPs.
Ooh, Berserker Probes. 💀

I'd like to have some Aliens that feel like an actual galactic civilization, not just some generic "good Aliens" / "evil Aliens". The Alien Civ could consist of various factions / superpowers itself. all with their own agendas and goals (think of Empire, Feds, Alliance, Criminals etc for Humans). Maybe they don't even know about the Thargoids yet, maybe Thargoids play a role in their mythology/religion as some obscure, ancient god or daemon. Maybe they have found some Guardian Ruins themselves and are currently trying to figure out how to incoroprate Guardian technology into their own. Some story hook to make them not appear stagnat and "gamey" ("Hey, we're just sitting here waiting for some Commander to discover us")

I'd like to have some good story and narrative surrounding the introduction of these Aliens. When Thargoids were introduced piecemeal, I didn't even own Elite yet. But I still followed the story development in gaming media and I loved the mystery of it all.
I'd like to have a narrative that develops over time, from the first obsure sightings and chance encounters, to some deliberate attempts to make contact, the struggle to decode their language, to actual first contact and some form of early, careful diplomatic relationship...

Soooo....maybe Aliens with the next major DLC/Expansion in 2025 :p

Well, the Guardian AI is probably still lurking in the galaxy even if its creators have gone extinct. We have no way of knowing how many forces it has at its disposition.

Space snakes. Giant snakes, 8 times the length of FC's. They do not reside on planets, but in space. I'm not clever enough to work out the science behind that bit. They should reside in the outer reaches of the galaxy to terrify explorers in little ships. Yes you can kill them.

Everyone's game seems to be full of bloody giant multicolored space snakes at the moment!

Forget snakes on a plane, it's snakes on a spaceship!

I... actually kind of like the fact that there are only the ancient unfeeling hive mind, and a long dead race we may have been able to more easily communicate and understand.

It seems more plausible - the likelihood of multiple sentient races appearing and evolving within the same time period and being able to communicate effectively seem low to me.

Also, if they had another race that were fully communicable, then they'd need to create their own space stations and such, and, allow us to chat with them and take missions...

That would make it pretty gross for me, as they'd end up just seeming like most alien races in most sci fi.

Humans with strange body shapes and skin colouration. Urg.

Some incomprehensible machinery doing their billion-year long tasks.
They'd be indestructible by any means of humans/guardians/thargoids.
You could interrupt or change part of the minor (to those entities, could be pretty big to us) details of the workings, but at your own peril if you linger.
Players would be treated by the machinery with total indifference, we'd be to them like single dust particles are to human society - seemingly never really noticed, but if unlucky enough to become irritating, brushed aside.
