What are good options for homemade HOTAS stands?

I have my HOTAS on a couple stools, but they're a little high so the stick tweaks my wrist a little, when I'm dog-fighting other ships. What are good options for homemade HOTAS stands?

Often easier to lower the desk or raise the chair, but some wood, a few screws, and some clamps to hold it to your desk should be cheap and serviceable.

Might be worth telling us what HOTAS you have OP.

Some are easier to mount than others.

I made new arms for my chair out of wood - they are solid instead of just the default curved arms, I attach them using the same bolt holes as the previous arms.

I them made 2 platforms and attached those to the new wood arm sides at exactly the right height and covered them with mouse rubber. The right platform is set at an angle, so that when the chair is reclined - my default position, the platform is horizontal so the mouse doesn't move about on it's own. The left platform is angled to match my left hand position at rest and gets used for my razer orbweaver.

I added 2 places for each side where I can bolt down my X55's to keep them steady during high stress dogfights.

When I don't use them I unbolt them (a minute at most) and can then use the mousepad with my mouse.

I also added a crossbrace for my keyboard and an extra smaller area to use a mouse when the joysticks are in place, to make it easy to select stuff in menus etc.

I would NEVER go back to using a desk for keyboard and mouse. It's super comfy and ergonomically perfect.

Some awesome setups in here! I really need to do something about my setup. I just butt my armrests up against my desk. It works, but it makes my hotas a little too high, and also a little too much of a reach. It definitely creates some fatigue. Using velcro to hold the hotas down is one of the best ideas I've ever heard. Should work great on the T.flight since it doesn't have any way to bolt it down.

If you're going to go the velcro route, I think standard 2-inch wide would be fine, I went the industrial route but it's a serious pain to try to take them off, I've almost ripped the arms off the chair because the velcro was on so well.

Yeah, the idea seems great, execution seems a little overkill. I was thinking like 4 patches of velcro. I don't think I need much. It's pretty rare that I get excited enough to move the base around, but when it happens, it's never good because I'm obviously already excited about something. Just a little something extra to hold it in place should be perfect.

You guys fly around when you fight? What for? Does a ship moving at say 300m/s actually manages to avoid being hit by a lazur beem travelling at 300,000,000 m/s?

Depends on your seat. I have two set ups. One is an office chair that has fold up arms. I've screwed a metal bar and attached planks of wood cut to size on each arms, and screwed my warthog base to one, and the CH Pro throttle just sits on the other. It cost me about £40 all up, including the chair, which I bought second hand, and the materials from the hardware store.

My other rig uses a Playseat Challenge (I needed a fold up solution), for which I used a couple of motocycle handlebar mirror mounts that I ordered from Aliexpress. You just need to make sure the mount is the right size for the tubing of the seat.

I then had an angled steal bracket made up to screw the throttle to, and seeing as I use centre mount for the joystick on that seat, I just screwed a block of wood to the to two of the mirror mounts, and then attached my Mongoos T-50 to that block of wood (that specific stick is made to be mounted in such a way).

I find that the best way to do a homebrew setup is to look over various different builds by other people, preferably with well detailed photos, then got to your local hardware store with a concept in mind, then find the parts that will help make it a reality. This does involve a good understanding of the way your stick is constructed, and mounted option.

EG, a Warthog, Virpil or VKB set up will likely allow you to screw things together, though the Virpil T-50 is mounted from the front/back of the body of the base, whereas the VKB, Warthog and WarBRD sticks have a base plate for mounting.

Sticks like a TM T16000M, or CH products don't really have anywhere to mount, so they will just sit on a plate of some description (wood or metal), and you'll likely want to have something to keep them in place, unless you're willing to screw into their base.

I've started designing my Captain's Chair. I actually haven't built anything yet but I will once I get the design complete. I'm going to try to do as a few other commanders have and post my progress and some design details.

Right now, I just have a laptop stand I have my HOTAS on that I also switch out with my KB+M

Don't need to move faster than the speed of light to move fast/eratically enough for the pilot/ship you are facing to have trouble keeping a bead on you.
