Horizons What are the Checkpoints and why we see them?

I sometimes find a checkpoint at mostly near the planets. Curiosity of human being; i target them and exit the supercruise. There are 3-4 ships and 3-4 nav beacons. They all are clean and say "If we don't be here all of you will be in danger" something like that.

Seriously, what are they and why are there?

Clearly they are for racing in supercruise. "Last to the Checkpoint is a dead duck!"

(They have something to do with combat zones. What exactly, I'm not really sure.)
