What Are Your Anti-Griefing Ideas?

You could always try the "drop and hide" trick. As soon as you see a player contact that appears to be heading for you, emergency drop out of SC, wait until your FSD recharges, then jump back into SC again. Usually you'll find that the other ship has moved on or you're in a new instance. You'll get a bit of damage from the drop, but it's better to pay the cost of 2% damage than the re-buy of your ship.

I still think a sort of aggro meter, similar to what GTA V has might be the best solution out there, the more aggressive you are the less you are matchmade with less aggressive people, eventually only put in together with people that are as aggressive with you, of course the meter goes down at a certain rate (which should be online time only), so yeah....that's my thought.
 
The solution is to learn where it's safe. I've always played open for the last two years and have never been griefed. Find an obscure system of your own rather than something recommended by someone else, in public. When I started I went in the direction of Sol. I ended up living in Lushertha. Then I moved to Liu Di.
I find it a treat when an empty box visits my system but if I start seeing two or three per day I'll consider it hot and probably move. I enjoy being able to come out of and fade back into obscurity.
I usually only see the hollow boxes in popular areas, like CGs, the Pomeche Canyons and Maia.
 
Having given this some thought, I really believe that if such a passive mode existed, where any ship without any weapons cannot be fired upon, then there would be justification to only have open mode and remove private and solo modes.

I'm sure I've missed out something in this idea, so what do you all think about it?

The thing you missed is that avoiding combat has nothing whatsoever to do with the reasons that some players play in solo or group mode.

Don't get me wrong, I'm against mindless griefing, but as far as we know, those players do not cheat or bend game mechanics in any way. They're just better at killing things than theirs victims. The only thing we need are a permanent bounties and more developed bounty system. We're facing killing commanders here, so it should be a serious crime in every lawful system, without abstract timer on it. But turning Elite into some kind of "safe environment" for everyone? Hell no.

There is a massive difference though, the 'dangerous' in Elite has nothing, to do with PvP, or other players.
A game can be 'dangerous' in itself, the entire issue here is if people should be subject of some random person's random mood, where they feel like overpowering weaker targets, griefing generally is when there is nothing that can be done to prevent it, in Elite the power difference is so big, because they only target weak targets, the aggressive idea I talk about should just scale with that, what the power difference is, so people who are near equally powered, say both have big combat ships, would not get affected by it, neither would two fdl's fighting it out, but a clipper? taking on a hauler? yeah that would count. GTA V where it works in fine doesn't really have a 'difference' level in power other then weapon access, and I think it takes that into account there actually.

But remember that Dangerous comes from the game itself NOT the PvP in the game, Elite is not a PvP game, nothing in the game is affected in one way or another by PvP, you can still DO PvP, but as far as mechanics go, if you kill an elite player or elite npc the game does not care. And the game itself can easily be made more dangerous and challenging again without ever touching the PvP element.

The question is, should people be at the risk of some random person online feeling in the mood for seal clubbing?

My suggestion would limit their pool of targets to similar minded people and wouldn't be permanent but dynamic, stop targeting those significantly weaker then you? your aggro meter would fall and you'd get matchmade with more people.

Better in-game communication and community tools so that like-minded people can band up easily and defend themselves. Creates more interesting PvP options and possibilities for Mobius-like communities within Open. Core mechanics are untouched and game gets longetivity. Net code might need some touching up for this, though.

Yet, this isn't about PvP options, not one bit.

This is about those that get in the mood to go seal clubbing, which will happen regardless of how many 'interesting' PvP options there ever are created. Because those that do this, aren't interested in interesting or challenging PvP.

Those are just extra perks and reasons to do it, and why everyone profits. Whether griefers find those interesting is irrelevant, trying to get into their heads is a waste of time.

I think the reporting to a Law Enforcement faction mechanic would work well. If a Cmdr attacks your ship whilst you're "clean", it allows you to access a "report" function. The reported Cmdr gets tagged as "Aggressor", and they show up as a red indicator on the galaxy map. Killing them improves your standing with the faction. It also makes them "wanted" to NPC security.

Here's a question for those wiser and more knowledgeable than myself; when you see a CMDR with a Wanted tag worth a figure of, say, 20,000 credits or more, how would you assume they earned that bounty?

I've only had a bounty of 5500 for accidentally destroying an NPC who wasn't wanted, so I don't know. I've always figured that to earn a bounty that big, the CMDR in question probably earned it destroying other CMDR's.

IME by making a PvE mistake like fluffing up a ground base attack. Biggest bounty I've had was gained from taking on authority ships while defending a friend in what I thought was an Anarchy system (iirc around 30kCr).

PKers, their bounty is either enormous & they wear it like a badge of pride (I respect this) or they are clean & carry an FSDI & a billion Shield Boosters on a serious ship. I don't stay within weapons range of a Clean Shield Boost stacker (but will happily chat from beyond weapons range). Mostly they will be fine, but the PKers seem to count amongst them.

I like to think I can spot a PvP loadout from a PvE one, and will occasionally wear this disguise.
 
Punishment for naughty people that works. Suspension of docking privileges, for example. I don't care if someone "griefs", or acts like a psychopath, but I'd like to see effectiv epunishments - fines don't work, neither do bounties. The only punishment that works is a punishment that would prevent oyu from doing something, and docking is pretty important for just about everyone.

Sure you can set up a ship to be sustainable with no docking, but then you need to start making sacrifices, and I think it would be interesting to see what sacrifices psychos make to their ships to continue random kills...

Honestly? Give the griefers more fun things to do. Most will leave. The ones who continue are the true maniacs. I'm okay with committed maniacs.

If I were looking at the no-content endgame of Elite with a fat pile of cash and my hyperRNGneered Federal Killvette with dual C4 G5 OC Skillcannons I'd be sinking as many CMDRs as I could and laughing away my rebuy.

On a slightly more serious note, how do others IFF another Cmdr? How do you tell the 'Griefer' from the regular player?

Over recent weeks (basically since day 1) I've had several 100,000CR bounties from base raid missions (plus a couple of small 000CR bounties for murder of varying degrees). I wouldn't begrudge that bounty being collected by a CMDR, nor would I give up the opportunity to collect on someone else's if it presented itself.

If they've got a bounty, griefer or not is irrelevant.

If you play Open, face the music.

Or join some of the Groups, or play Solo. It's exactly the same game as in Open, minus the griefers.

You should try open again, but go to a different place than Sothis/Ceos or the community goals. Because those places is where the grievers go. Kind of foolish that people don't know how to avoid them.
There's 400 billion systems out there, if you get grieved you went to one of those few popular systems. Too lazy to go any where else? Then you deserve to be easy pray.
I've been playing in open since engineers dropped and have only once been grieved, and that was my own fault for being there.

Private groups killed open multiplayer. Grievers didn't. The only people who I see in the game now in open are beginning players who haven't lost their balls yet on the occasional griever. ;)

In the extraction sites at the CG, it's sometimes crazy with CMDR's; I've collected some bounties of almost 100,000, and it's always been very chaotic and VERY fast. I've also ran off almost half a doozen CMDR's I know were bent on ganking noobs because I saw them do it and only engaged afterwards.

Overall, I have to say that I'm loving these bounty hunting hunting CG's!!!

"Well , my first thoughts would be, if I kill him , I will be labeled a MURDERER and every security ship will come looking for me , and when I try to hide by docking, will only be allowed to dock in Anarchy systems, those small outpost or stations at WAR, and charged huge docking fees with limited repairs.
