What are your commander names?

Back in the day (1996), I had a Top Gun game for my PC (I think it was Fire at Will - Spectrum Holobyte), and you had to pick a pilot name from a list which was then your callsign in the game. There was a lot of speech in the game and your callsign became part of the game, you were called it by all the characters, and so on, which I loved.

I chose 'Viking' and it's stuck to this day.

And yes, I have red hair! :D

My Commander name is the same as my Forum name and has been in existence in one form or another since i first started flying in Air Warrior in 1998. My husband was Zebedee (from The Magic Roundabout and I wanted something associated with that, so chose Florence. For my game iD, which was limited to 5 characters, it was shortened to Flos - I wanted Floss but it was taken, but did not want Flo. After the sad demise of Air Warrior (thanks to EA!!) I moved to Aces High and extended Flos to Flossy. I have used Flossy in other games too, such as World War II Online, There and Seducity. :)

Mine is Poltergeist

Because I will hunt you wherever you go. Remember if you think you are being watched, you are right.

However, my ship name stays - Tetsukaze meaning Steel Wind. Probably very bad Japanese, but I like it.
It works in Japanese; the rules of word formation allow it. "Kamikaze" is a good parallel. "Kami" is Japanese for "god"; "kaze" means "wind".

Strictly speaking, "tetsu" is iron. Steel is "kou". Most people use "tetsu" interchangeably for both though - its quite unusual to meet unalloyed iron these days!

Are you a Pink Floyd fan by any chance?

Anyway, my commander is the_naked_ape. It's the title of a Desmond Morris book. My ship is called The Full Stop. It's taken from a line in Excession (an Ian M. Banks masterpiece in the Culture universe):

An Outside Context Problem was the sort of thing most civilisations encountered just once, and which they tended to encounter rather in the same way a sentence encountered a full stop.

The ship is an A-rated Viper equipped for bounty-hunting.

My very favorite anime Legend of Galactic Heroes had a character named commander poplin, so I figured in a game where we have CMDR stuck in front of our name it would be very fitting.

My game name is Justin Joying-McSelf because when I started in PB it was the first time I had played a computer game for over 20 years. I hoped that it would encourage others not to think that I was there for a fight. My forum name is my initials.
