General / Off-Topic What book would you like to see made into a film?

"The Stainless Steel Rat" by Harry Harrison, but this is starting to be a crowded genre what with Valerian and Guardians of the Galaxy

Maybe some real William Gibson would be nice. "Neuromancer", "Count Zero", "Mona Lisa Overdrive"

Greg Egan did an interesting book "Quarantine" where the hero had a device that could pick which universe out of the forever-branching multiverse would become his reality... a kind of luck machine

With the proviso that a series.woiod be better than a film to give the material room to breath

Not sci find but still awesome - "the first law trilogy" by Joe Abercrombie. With Ian McShane as Bayaz.

SciFi, "Inherit the stars" just the first book would do (those others are good but it gets a bit timeywimey). Based around the discovery of a 50,000 year old human skeleton in a space suit on the moon and going off from there it would make a fine short (4ish hour long episodes) series. There are no "bad guys" as such, just a really good detective mystery with profound conveniences.

Peter F Hamilton trilogies, "Greg Mandel" would be a good series, you could do each book as 2/3 episodes so a 9 episode series. The first 2 wouldn't be to expensive.and with a bit of updating to the political situation (swap the socialist PSP for a far right government, stretch the time lines) it could be very relevent.

NightsDawn and Commonwealth trilogies would require a much bigger budget and planning for several 20 episode series so would be a bigger risk. Done right either would be great. The only thing is they would need to rewrite the end portions. There's nothing wrong with them per second, but PFH does tend to wrap up a 1000 page series in a couple of pages!

The Laundry files by Charles Strode would be a good ongoing series, very British.

And his Merchant Princes series would also be great.

The SSR is one of my all time favourite books, I know someone held the rights to the film for a period of time and never did anything about it. Would love a film of Jim DiGriz one day

I'd love to see the Dominic Flandry series become a movie series, starting with Ensign Flandry.

Now, to be clear, most books I think are best made as close to written as possible, and I typically don't like modern Hollywood fare, most of it is overwhelmingly over the top for me, but... the Flandry series is one that might be better if they departed somewhat from the books and better if they went Hollywood (not to) over the top...

For anyone who doesn't know, Dominic Flandry was, basically, James Bond in Space, two years before there was a James Bond... :)
