Elite / Frontier What caused the death of the space shooter/trader genres?

What's wrong with dumb shooters?

Being dumb is the general answer, but in this case it's mostly reviving an old series as something simpler, dumber and with vastly different gameplay, to the point of being a completely different genre.

For example, I'd imagine Frontier 3: Elite 4 turning out to be a cover based corridor shooter (with EXTREME romance options) would incite a fair amount of righteous butthurt around here. It would, however be the only Elite known to fair amount of next-gen <s>retards</s> gamers, and each of us would likely pop a vein each time we'd hear or read that someone loves corridor shooters with cover system "just like Frontier: Elite!".

In short (tl;dr version), ing all over the legacy of an old and respected game, or creative work series in general is doubleplusungood.

yeah, it's an empty space in the video games' market.

WOW ruined all the genres and all the games in general.

But the time of WOW (and similar games) is near to an end.
People are tired of such games and there is a BIG possibility, for the software houses, to make a great hit with a new game of the lost genres.

i mean, there is no more a good space trader game, there is no more real good fantasy role play game... the first who fill these two empty slots will make A REAL AMOUNT of money.

One slot was just been filled with Skyrim !
Skyrim actually is a great commercial success and is the proof of what i am saying.
The other spot of the lost genres games (the space trading and shooting) is still empty... but for how long ?

My advice is : Dear Frontier developements, you have the greatest title ever in the video games history... why you don't use it before some other big software house will steal the empty spot ?

Do elite 4 and do it FAST ... because who has time must not waste time !

Nothing. What rankles is giving a dumb shooter the name "Syndicate".

Fair enough. I must admit I'm looking forward to the new x-com stategy game and couldn't care less about the fps version.

Syndicate looks like it might work well in fps mode, but I take your point.

@Sterlino, I'm not sure WOW is quite on it's way out yet, it lost 2mil subscribers but still has a massive 10mil left.

I do agree Frontier should make the new Frontier game quickly though, but that's more from a selfish point of view. There was an article on the BBC News website about a beta Raspberry Pi board being sold for thousands of pounds on e-bay, and when the article spoke about Raspberry Pi's co-founder he was still introduced as the man who gave us Elite. It's an incredibly well know game and to think there isn't a market out there for a new one, I think/hope that's a gross underestimation of us regular gamers.

For what it's worth, I think the game would actually benefit from a reboot (I know they're ten a penny at the moment), but in this case it might work. Call the game High Frontier which, if memory serves me right, was DB's original choice for FE2. Drop the name Elite if it causes legal issued the David Braben name carried more weight than even the Elite name.

Not if EA makes it heavily scripted railroaded shooter with reluctant protagonist.

Squad based 'tactical' FPS with a lot of freedom in regards to approach, destructible environments and disposable, dispassionate agents would work fine.
Call of Dumb: Modern Borefare: <s>Syndicate</s> Generic Cyberpunk Theme Pack won't.
