What causes the sudden FPS drops/stuttering?

Ever since the early access beta I have experienced frame drops/stuttering which can be quite aggressive at times.

In particular, they appear to happen when making hyperspace jumps, or when approaching certain planets/stations, or most annoyingly, when being interdicted. The game stutters like crazy some times and I can't seem to figure out why, or how to make it stop.

Has anyone figured out how to solve this issue and what is causing it?

I am really looking forward to getting a VR headset at some point this year (SteamVR or Oculus, undecided yet), but this stutter is incredibly immersion breaking and quite irritating when it happens, and I imagine it would be magnified x100 when experiencing it with VR.

I have similar issues when I'm quickly (perhaps too quickly) approaching a planet, and have to make a fast turn.

I think quite a few people get hit by this .. jumping in to hyperspace / dropping out near the sun and also sometimes heading in to planets. I've yet to see an explanation and personally, it's not an issue for me but I fully appreciate that some players find it quite jarring.

Perhaps it's texture loading / or netcode synchronising up instances? I don't think it's any reflection in your rig.

Exactly as you say, I experience this during (usually the first part of) the hyperspace "movie" and also when approaching planets in Supercruise.

Couple of observations:-

1. I have been playing since midday on Launch Day and have always experienced this.

2. My Supercruise stutter in the early days was a lot worse until I de-overclocked my GTX770 (which had been fine on other games at those settings). I have recently added a mild overclock and it has not made things as bad as those early days, in fact it does not seem to be any different from the non-overclocked settings.

3. The hyperspace stutter seems to ease off a bit when I am far away from populated systems. This is probably subjective and certainly undocumented (by me) but I do a lot of exploration and I don't seem to get quite as much stutter "out there" as I do when nearer to Sol.

4. I play a mixture of Open, Mobius and Closed, and have not observed any appreciable difference between the modes when it comes to stuttering.

It's a strange one. I haven't posted about it until now because I always figured that it was a known issue there would be a fix incoming, but it doesn't appear to be happening...Weirder still that everyone isn't experiencing it. It must be a setting somewhere.

With an FPS overlay on ED I see drops from over 100fps on my desktop machine, and 60fps on the laptop, to 15fps (with massive amounts of stuttering) when trying to escape interdictions, flying near certain planets and the initial jump into hyperspace.

It could be specifically related to an Nvidia setting, but no idea which one. Would be great if other people that have had this issues and solved it could give some feedback.

I played on my old laptop with settings on medium and it always happened to me (thought it was the laptop not being powerful enough) so upgraded to a more powerful laptop and settings maxed and it still happens sometimes by planets

i can't be certain my friends but i think it's a networking communication issue.I am almost sure since when through hyperspace , exiting hyperspace or approaching space station or when in super cruise new contacts appear i believe there is a communication between our computer and the main server/servers of the game. Also could be a slow down from our internet provider but i doubt it because i don't have any other lagging issues. probably an update in server or the game client could fix this in the future.

All of my stuttering seems to be associated with disk activity, but I'm struggling to find the cause.

I had originally assumed it was the P2P netcode suddenly using up processor time with interrupts from flurries of incoming data, but on my system it could be Shadowplay writing to the temporary file, which typically pushes more data to the disk when the screen suddenly changes (e.g. hyperspace), but I've not fully identified it yet. It does seem a touch better with SP off, but I like having it enabled.

Suggestions for disk activity monitoring tools anyone?

(Aside - thinking to myself... why would disk writes cause that issue...)

hard disk sentinel my friend is good for monitor disks health/activity.You could be right about this but do you have hard disk drive or solid state disk drive ? in case of solid state drive this should never happen

I thought it was a server issue. My rig is ridiculously overpowered for ED, and I've noticed stuttering seems to come and go...

This has been my thinking on the matter too. That it is a network bandwidth issue from FD's side. My net connection is very low ping and high bandwidth and I have no issue with any other game, multiplayer or otherwise.

I created this thread just in case it was something on my end that could be fixed by me.
