What did you think about the Dev Diary Format ?

The former.

I missed the livestream transmission and wondered why I could find no comments about it in the forum afterwards. When I watched it later, I realized why ... it was best forgotten.
On this forum we've been banging on about DBOBE being conspicuous only by his absence.... we now get him talking about EDO and even addressing the historical 'salt' from this community..... then we say 'best forgotten' .... it really is no wonder FDev from DBOBE down through the CM's have become disenchanted with saying anything at all, or interacting with our 'community'; when they do, they just garner bucket loads of negativity or 'salt' in return... just IMHO... o7

I have nothing against DB's piece. The rest of it, however .....

I think we just have to expect everything to be marketing.

I don't know if I'm alone in this, but when you tell me you are very, very excited it does not make me excited*. I get excited when I'm told something that's exciting. After the first few times I hear about someone else's amazing level of excitement, it just annoys me.

*Except under rare and very specific circumstances.

There are 2 separate issues here though.

Information or input the 'community' demands/wants/thinks it deserves and trolls about
Information that fdev want us to have or know about that players are waiting for

The 1st yes is almost 100% responsible for the lack of communication. A new CM cant say hello without being told within 1 page what 'The Community' expects of them and what their job is and then being trolled about PP, VR etc etc Questions that the community know there are no current answers for or 'not yet' and when the CM responds with that they just get salt so they stop communicating, SB comments last night make it pretty obvious they are still reading but can't or won't respond to normal people because the trolls will just jump on them any time they do.

None of that should affect the 2nd. There is a whole community out here who are waiting for the 2nd. We will accept bad news and prefer certain 'Not yet/Not at launch' or 'No' over uncertainty.

We all use sarcasm and dark humour, only one is actually salty, often about things we are unhappy with to highlight it and keep it in the 'news' but one group is much more forgiving and accepting. Again, the 1st should not affect the 2nd and it almost did....but we forgive and forget and look forward to the next peek. And we'd just like a journey a bit more like SuperCruise Assist than Planet Coaster. (now thats sarcasm :)!)

Its not really a diary as such but more of a quick showcase. But as far as it went it was nice- however its brevity has to be tempered with regular output otherwise 5 minutes every two months is.....not good. It did not really show things flowing, just someone gripping a Dyson, some nice landscapes and well done concepts.

Although it was great to see DBOBE Proc Gen Warlord Master I was a little saddened to see it pre-recorded. An AMA would have been the ideal but the mods would have a breakdown with the VEHURRRR NUHHH crowd. That and me with POWAHPLEH! To be honest the Deep Dive afterwards was not really a deep dive at all, and needs to be renamed and billed differently. That and a new microphone for Derrin.

It's main purpose is likely to whet the appetite of potential new purchasers, and I'd say it's doing that very well. Keeps us alert for the next Diary and keeps the forums active with chat. (y)

Yeah, that seems to have been the target but I found it overly glossy and slightly irritating as an established player. The term "Dev Diary" seems misplaced given how light it was... "advert" suffices. Also, as a VR player the line “… the fulfilment of the promise that we made right at the start of Elite...” bothered me as well. That said, it would be a minor miracle if they'd won me over given my feelings at the moment.

Dev Diary - wasn't a Dev Diary, it was Odyssey Trailer#2
Discovery Scanner - wasn't a Discovery Scanner, it was a trailer discussion
This ^^^

I have to say that travesty of a Discovery Scanner livestream yesterday managed to utterly destroy all the excitement their 5 minute Dev Teaser had managed to build up. Frontier are truly hopeless at this whole communication/promotion/hype thing.

I think COVID makes it worse, but the biggest flaw for me is the reliance on livestreams. I get words are not street but FD seem to have forgotten the written word, images and the newsletter. In the KS days the bias was towards newsletters and forum posts while now its stretched out to the point of being see through.

I agree with all you say, but the Newsletter is for existing players. The livestream turning to Twitch suggests to me they are trying to 'reach out' to potential players, although judging by the standard of this one the target audience is .... well, enough said.

There is another game that does nothing but newsletters, videos and forum posts. Its not going down so well with their community as they want some progress next year not more newsletters this year.

The short video was good. It showed us a few snippets and gave a bit of info.

The first part of the live stream with DB was enjoyable, but the rest of it was somewhat disappointing. I was expecting something similar to what we've had previously; Dav or somebody explaining how things work and the ideas process, but it was just waffle and I gave up after a while.

As with most PR things done at this time, They need To UPS/DHL people more CAMERAs and more Mics...
The being at home is not an excuse for poor camera quality feeds...
IF Amazon can still ship and delivery Items during UK bad times, There no reason not to ship 8 HQ cameras out for these streams and good mics...

The format and presentation was nice, but I was really hoping for a little more meat than just "we can stand in front of ships in the sand".

edit: and we can scan plants. Which is nice, but still hoping for a little more meat.

Real dev diaries are pretty useless for games intended for release in the short term, you are either getting a very out of date historical "I just did this" from months ago when a developer was still doing something that was still vunerable in so far as they can't know if it's actually going to be a finished thing they can announce, but which they have now completed and it's been signed off by QA and they can announce it. In other words, it's a 'marketing' historical footnote for a feature that's probably changed massively since the developer actually worked on it.

Alternatively, as with many "crowd funding" excercises, you get "I just did this" and the thing that they talk about mysteriously vanishes when said feature doesn't integrate well with something else, or becomes too "expensive" to complete, or just gets blocked and goes into the backlog while developers work on stuff they know they can actually deliver.

Much better to just do away with misleading terms, the CD projekt red presentations where they just show a bunch of "pre-alpha" footage with some commentary about what's being shown seem to go down well.
